Position Focus :
The Associate Director of Board Relations (BR) will be responsible for strengthening and advancing the relationships between the Yale School of Management (SOM) and its alumni, friends, and philanthropic donors through a range of compelling board management, donor relations, communications, and events.
Success dependent on ability to be a highly collaborative, innovative, detailed, strategic, creative, and an intellectually curious / broad thinker who will employ best practices for stewardship of SOM board members.
The position reports to the Director of Board Relations and collaborates with all members of SOM’s Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) team, Dean’s Office, and others throughout the school.
Essential Duties :
- Manage the continual growth and development of all SOM development-driven advisory boards, the Yale Center Beijing Advisory Committee, and other boards as developed with particular focus on the Alumni Advisory Board, Recent Graduate Committee, Council of Global Advisors and liaising with the school’s center boards.
- Work collaboratively with the Deputy Dean of Alumni, Development, and Strategic Initiatives and the Director of Board Relations, with a focus on strategic engagement activities, fundraising, communications, and outreach efforts for the boards.
- Responsible for all aspects of management of the various boards, including high-level planning and implementation of board meetings, dinners, special events, conference calls, and other related events.
- Provide committee members with continuous support, including coordinating meetings, developing agendas, assisting with board member recruitment activities, and provide updates on relevant initiatives across Yale University and its schools and units.
- Manage the BR’s online event management, marketing, and registration software. Work in tandem with the Alumni Engagement team on cross departmental events when required.
- Determine administrative, catering, facility, and equipment needs for board activities, while working closely with event and catering staff to provide a superior quality customer engagement experience.
- Research, draft, edit, and track a wide variety of written communications including acknowledgement correspondence, board reports, and presentation materials, event-related materials, web and digital communications.
- Develop and maintain pipelines of future members and facilitate the renewal process for board members.
- Monitor media for coverage on board members in news articles, press releases and television programs. Draft correspondence on behalf of Dean and Deputy Dean acknowledging board members’ career and other personal milestones.
- May take on other duties as assigned.
- Occasional travel required, including international travel.

Essential Duties
1. Manages and leads research on various federal rules and regulations as well as University policies and procedures to resolve problems and determine the best course of action for the functional area.
2. Recommends course of action to higher authority for the handling and disposition of problems related to the functional area.
3. Counsels faculty, students and staff on issues related to administrative operations of the University function and areas of concern for the function.
4. Manages statistical and analytical information regarding office activities and areas of operational and administrative concern for the function.
5. Leads in long-range planning for the office activities of a specific functional area. 6. Interprets and administers various University and federal policies and regulations.
7. Disseminates accurate and up-to-date information regarding areas of concern. 8. Formulates and establishes policies regarding area’s function.
9. Manages a staff of exempt and non-exempt employees. 10. May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Minimum requirement of Bachelor’s Degree in related field and three years of demonstrated experience or an equivalent combination of education and related demonstrated experience.
Required Skill / Ability 1 :
Outstanding written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated ability to work closely with senior administrators, donors, board members, and colleagues in SOM’s DAR team, University’s Office of Development, SOM faculty and students, and development colleagues in Yale’s schools and units.
Required Skill / Ability 2 :
Demonstrated ability working with deadlines in a fast-moving, deadline-driven environment. Ability to work independently and inventively on complex projects, manage multiple projects simultaneously, drive results, and maintain the highest standards of output, business practices, good judgment, and discretion.

Ability to maintain high levels of confidentiality on sensitive issues and on all matters related to relationships with the DAR office and other key constituencies.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills :
Advanced Degree. Track record of strategic planning & creative communications work. Experience in an academic institution of higher education.
Proven experience working with designers, web masters, event vendors & videographers. Proven experience with board relations and / or donor stewardship.
Knowledge of : , Customer Relations Management (Blackbaud), Workday, Excel, Adobe.
