About the North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation

The North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation is an independent self-funding 501(c)3 nonprofit organization supporting activities that help meet the educational and health needs of today's society and future generations.

For decades, the Foundation has been a proud supporter of programs in our state that help advance science, health, and education.

The Foundation is governed by a Board of Directors that includes community leaders. The day-to-day operations are overseen by the staff.

Since establishment in 1986, they have awarded $90.1 million in grants over 37 years! They pay approximately $3 million in grants each year to North Carolina nonprofit organizations.

Purpose of the Position

The Executive Director (ED) serves as chief executive officer for the Foundation Board of Directors. The ED confers with leading health, science, and education policy and program leaders to develop recommendations on Foundation policies, procedures, areas of focus, types of grants, and programs for approval by the Foundation Board.

The ED proactively works with the Board to research and develop a strategic plan for Foundation activities and identify projects and areas of need for potential grant support that are consistent with the mission of the Foundation.

With the approval of the Board, the ED will design and implement a grant management system for the N.C. GlaxoSmithKline Foundation including strategic priorities, policies, procedures and guidelines, budget allocation, program development, and program evaluation in compliance with relevant state and federal laws and regulations.

Key Responsibilities

Governance

  • Ensure the Board in the administration of Foundation programs and grantmaking activities adheres to the Articles of Incorporation and all relevant federal and state laws and regulations as well as policies and procedures developed and approved by the Board.
  • Ensure adequate staffing of Board standing committees including audit, investment, governance, and nominating / selection as well as ad hoc committees established by the Board.

Financial

  • Work with the Board of Directors, staff and firms retained by the Board to oversee the investment of assets and the disbursement of those assets as well as implement recommendations on program policies, procedures, areas of focus, and types of support.
  • Direct the management of the freestanding, grantmaking organization with an average of $60M in assets and an average annual payout of $3M consistent with Foundation mission, vision and objectives and state and federal regulatory requirements.
  • Responsible for receiving, evaluating, and administering other funds contributed to the Foundation by the corporation for special programs and projects within the scope of the Foundation and of interest to the corporation.

Operational

  • Oversee and direct the implementation of two statewide programs funded by the Foundation specifically Women in Science and the Child Health Recognition Awards.
  • Represent the Foundation to foster potential collaborative programs and projects with significant stakeholders including senior management, university presidents and other leadership, officials of other foundations, corporations, state, and federal elected and appointed officials.
  • Oversee and direct the design and implementation of the Foundation’s communication program including preparation of the Foundation’s annual report, application, brochures and special programs, presentations, and events.
  • Supervise Foundation staff including fiscal staff, program and communication staff, administrative and temporary support staff and consultants and vendors assigned to special projects.

Experience

  • Eight years of experience working with foundation boards.
  • A demonstrated statewide awareness and understanding.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated expertise in research and analysis and project management.
  • Excellent management skills, communication skills and organizational skills.
  • Ability to interact effectively with senior management and high-level external contacts.
  • Integrity, judgement, and diplomacy in response to sensitive requests for funding.
  • Experience in public service and / or foundations required.
  • Experience in the pharmaceutical industry is a plus, but not required.

Education

Must have at minimum an advanced degree in finance, business, liberal arts, social sciences, or law.
