About the Department

The Met’s Department of Education dedicated to making art meaningful and accessible for everyone is central to the mission of the Museum.

The Department is a national and international leader in museum-based education and public programming, pushing boundaries through continuous innovation and experimentation.

• In-person and virtual programs include high school and college internships that promote career development and diversity;
• PreK 12 educator programs that train teachers to integrate art into curricula across disciplines; performances, concerts, lectures and symposia that feature preeminent artists and scholarship;

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES :

You guide community-based initiatives for new and historically marginalized audiences. You ensure there is variety and diversity in Education Department initiatives through strategic partnerships and collaborative program development.

You proactively identify opportunities to extend the Education Department’s reach to local communities through direct engagement with the permanent collection and exhibitions.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES :

• Work closely with the Educator in Charge, Public Programs and Engagement to establish current and long-range objectives, priorities, and metrics for community partnerships and initiatives.
• Build and maintain partnerships with external cultural organizations to increase investment in Education programs.
• Design and oversee community-based education programs for multigenerational and adult audiences.
• Manage artist-in-residence programs, including the Civic Practice Partnership, and large-scale Museum events.
• Assess content and formats of existing public programs and propose innovations and initiatives to extend reach and impact among local communities.
• Work with diverse colleagues across the Museum to advance the quality, relevance, and variety of Education programs.
• Develop and manage the area’s annual budget, working closely with the Development Department to secure program support.
• Supervise and instill high performance levels and accountability in staff.
• Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE :

• M.A. in Art History, Museum Education, or other related field, or equivalent experience
• 5-7 years of experience in education and public programming within an art museum; additional experience working closely with community stakeholders.
• Experience building authentic community partnerships and executing robust, audience-centered public programs for adult and multigenerational audiences.
• Administrative and management experience including developing and managing budgets, supervising staff, and project management from ideation to delivery within a museum education department.
• Ability to effectively manage and mentor staff within a complex institutional environment.
• Record of collaboration with Development in fundraising initiatives for education programs in a museum context.
• Knowledge of current learning theories and pedagogies for general adult audiences
• Knowledge of and experience working with contemporary artists
• Full familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

COMPENSATION RANGE :

• Pay Range : $95,000-$115,000 / annually
• The advertised pay scale reflects the good faith minimum and maximum salary range for this role. The advertised pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage for any specific employee.

The specific compensation offered to a candidate may be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s experience, education, special licensing or qualifications, and other factors.

Location Requirements

At time of employment, employees are expected to be located within commuting distance of the Museum. Commuting distance means that they are located in one of following states : New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, or Pennsylvania (the Tri-state and PA areas), and be able to commute to and from the Museum in a single day.
