Summary : Reporting directly to the Principal, The Assistant Principal (AP) for Curriculum and Instruction supervises the academic program under direction of the Principal.

The AP works with and coordinates the efforts of the Academic Dean, academic Department Chairs, Director of Library Services and Research Program, Director of Academic Technology, and Educational Support Coordinator to monitor and facilitate the academic progress of all students.

The AP shares the functions of curriculum development, mentoring, supporting, and evaluating teachers, and providing instructional support for faculty and students.

The AP also serves as a member of the Administrative Team and of Academy Administration. The Assistant Principal of Curriculum and Instruction provides academic leadership and assists the Principal in maintaining an environment that reflects the school’s mission to educate young women for a life of faith, integrity, and truth.

The position requires that the person be a practicing Roman Catholic.

Essential Job Functions :

Assists the Principal in the administration and supervision of the high school and may exercise such authority in the absence of the Principal.

Meets weekly with the Principal and the Assistant Principal of Student Affairs

Teaching and Learning Leadership Leads efforts to monitor, evaluate, and expand curriculum with the academic departments.

Oversees implementation of Strategic Plan and Curriculum Board initiativesOversees the publication and ongoing revision of the course catalog.

Chairs the Curriculum Board.Assists the Principal in preparing academic in-service opportunities. Promotes and recommends professional development opportunities for faculty.

Oversees student attendance as it relates to the academic program.Participates in formal learning plan meetings.Facilitates conferences for at-risk students, their parents / guardians, and their teachers.

Facilitates extraordinary academic plans for students in need, coordinating details with the appropriate academic advisor and faculty.

Attends school-related social functions.Assists the Principal in compiling data, including that required for CAIS / WASC / WCEA evaluation / accreditation.

Chairs the CAIS / WASC Self Study.Potentially teaches one class load.

Hiring, Supervision and Evaluation of Faculty Works with the human resources department to identify and interview candidates for teaching positions.

Attends faculty recruiting events. May require travel.Orients, supervises and evaluates new faculty to facilitate their assimilation into the school community.

Formally observes new faculty at least once each semester in order to assess implementation of the school’s philosophy and goals, teaching competence, and the content of the curriculum being taught.

Provides mentoring experiences and professional development for new teachers.Works with department chairs on regular evaluation of all faculty to stimulate professional improvement as a goal-oriented and ongoing process.

Performs ongoing evaluations of teachers, both formal and informal.

Requirements

Education and Experience :

  • Practicing Roman Catholic strongly preferred.
  • BA required. Teaching / Administrative Certification or MA in education, educational leadership, or related field, required.
  • 5+ years’ successful secondary teaching / counseling experience.
  • 2+ years in academic leadership, mentoring / supervising teachers.
  • Willing to adapt to changing work priorities; communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality, working as a part of a team, setting priorities, establishing and maintaining effective relationships.
  • Able to communicate effectively with students, staff, the public, and school administration.
  • Must accurately compile and assess data, summarize information and provide reports to his / her supervisor.

  • People Skills : Strong interpersonal and social skills. Must seek to create and maintain positive relationships with employees, parents, alumnae, donors and other school constituencies encountered.
  • Initiative : Must possess the ability to proactively initiate, participate and follow through in strategic planning matters and on work assigned.

Positive attitude and teamwork perspective are essential.

Learning Posture : Must maintain a learning posture, embrace change and individual and institutional growth. Expected to remain current with industry standards, participate in professional development training and the annual employee retreat.

Wage Range

The rate of pay offered to the selected candidate is based on internal pay policy and budget. New hires are commonly paid at the minimum of the wage range or within the lower part of the range.
