Millwright Mechanic

Join our dynamic team as a Millwright Mechanic where you will operate and maintain sophisticated mechanical systems and equipment in support of research activities. You will have the opportunity to work in a unique environment, directly contributing to the success of our cutting-edge projects.

Responsibilities

  • Operate facility overhead cranes, bucket trucks, man-lifts, forklifts, and portable cranes. Provide rigging for lifting equipment and material using lifting straps, chain hoists, and come-alongs.
  • Perform welding tasks in various positions using oxy-acetylene, AC-DC electric arc, M.I.G., and T.I.G. with materials such as stainless steel, carbon steel, aluminum, copper, and brass.
  • Utilize large mechanical tools including drill presses, power hacksaws, band saws, shears, pipe threaders, brakes, rollers, lathes, and grinders, as well as small power tools like air wenches and drills.
  • Design and construct complex tubing systems using flaring machines and tubing benders.
  • Disassemble, repair, reassemble, and verify various types of valves, valve operators, and pressure regulators.
  • Operate hydraulic systems and high-pressure gas systems, including gas tubers, pressure reduction stations, and pressure pumps.
  • Work with environmental test chambers, mass spectrometer leak detectors, and vacuum systems.
  • Assist in the installation and operation of intricate research test packages in various test facilities.
  • Fabricate, install, operate, and maintain mechanical control test panels and special test equipment.
  • Perform general maintenance on mechanical vacuum pumping equipment, diffusion pumps, cryo-pumps, steam ejector systems, heat exchangers, and cryogenic vaporizers.
  • Inspect and evaluate mechanical equipment and facility operating systems and make maintenance and repair recommendations.
  • Fabricate, install, and operate cryogenic systems, including liquid hydrogen, liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen, and liquid helium.

Work Environment

The work takes place in the Test Facilities Operation, Maintenance, and Engineering (TFOME) team at the NASA Glenn Research Center, supporting aeronautics, space power, and propulsion test facilities. Openings are available in the Propulsion Systems Lab (PSL) and Wind Tunnel facilities.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.83 - $32.39 / hr.
