The Department

The department of Chicano & Latino Studies (CALS) is housed in the School of Arts and Humanities and offers students the opportunity to employ an interdisciplinary approach to the study of Latinx populations.

Students in our programs explore the histories, concerns, and challenges of different Latinx groups. Our curriculum also emphasizes past and present forms of resistance and activism such as Chicano rights movement, labor activism, the Puerto Rican struggle for independence, and others.

Courses in CALS invite students to critically examine the experiences and contributions of Latinx populations in relation to issues of political representation, linguistic policy, educational inequality, poverty, immigration, and symbolic struggles in media, literature, and the arts.

Our department's pedagogy and curriculum encourage critical awareness of the intersection between race, ethnicity, power, and social institutions.

The CALS Department's general education courses produce campus-wide transformative consciousness, while our major courses further depth and engagement.

As an ethnic studies Department, CALS is tasked with delivering general education courses in Area F and is central to Sonoma State's Strategic Plan 2025 Core Values of "diversity and social justice."

Our department and field empower students to understand and engage in building a more equitable world. Our courses engage students in critical exploration of power, difference, and the production of knowledge.

Duties of the Position

Each semester, we anticipate needing several lecturers to teach classes across the CALS major. These courses are usually general education (GE) and occasionally CALS core major classes.

Instructors teaching courses are responsible for all aspects of course development following the provided master course syllabus and signature assignment prompts.

• CALS 220 - Latina / o Arts and Humanities (GE F)
• CALS 273 - Latinos and Performance : Critical and Creative Readings (GE C)
• CALS 339 - Latinos and the U.S. Labor Market (GE D)
• CALS 352 - Chicano / Latino Philosophy (GE C)
• CALS 368 - Chicano / Latino Music (GE C)
• CALS 393 - Chicano / Latino Cinema (GE C)
• CALS 426 - Chicano / Latino Sociolinguistics (GE C)
• CALS 432 - Latinas / os and Globalization (GE D)
• CALS 451 - Latina / o Humanisms (GE C)

Professional Qualifications

To be recommended for appointment, the candidate must have :

• Required master's degree in Ethnic Studies, Chicano Studies, Latino Studies, or related field). Preferred Ph.D. in Chicano / Latino Studies or Ethnic Studies (or related field with an emphasis in Chicano / Latino studies).
• Demonstrated experience teaching ethnic studies courses that center Latinx populations using a critical race theory framework.
• Explicit commitment supporting diverse student populations and educational equity.

Rank and Salary

Full-time is a 15-unit workload per semester. Actual salary is dependent upon the number of units assigned, educational preparation, and availability of funds subject to any CSU system faculty contract salary increases.

• Salary commensurate with degree level and experience.
• Anticipated Hiring Salary Range : $4,530 - $6,056 per full-time month.
• The full-time (15 units per semester) monthly base salary range indicated above is prorated to the number of units worked and are paid in six monthly payments for each full semester.
• Selection as a candidate in the applicant pool, does not guarantee employment. Temporary Faculty appointments are made on a part-time, temporary basis and contingent upon department needs and funding.
• Temporary Faculty appointments are made on a semester-by-semester basis.
• Relocation expenses will not be provided for temporary faculty appointments.
• Expenses incurred to attend an interview for temporary faculty positions are not reimbursed by the University.

• Temporary Faculty with three-year contracts do not need to reapply.
• Temporary Faculty who had a paid appointment during the prior academic year with your department (either one or both semesters);

this includes Lecturers on the Re-Employment list are not required to apply through the Recruitment Pool unless they would like to be evaluated to teach additional courses, not currently designated as qualified to teach.
