The salary range for this position is $85,947 to $95,410, depending on the successful candidate's years of teaching experience at the college-level.

The position comes with generous benefits (scu.edu / hr / benefits), including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, and university contributions toward retirement.

There are two housing assistance programs : Rental assistance to ease the transition into the local housing market, and housing purchase assistance for tenure-stream faculty.

Job Description

The Department of Public Health at Santa Clara University (SCU), a Jesuit, Catholic university, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Public Health focused on LGBTQ+ health.

This position will bring queer intersectional inquiry on health and well-being to document, understand, and address LGBTQ+ health disparities.

Given the salience of the policy domain, and the relevance of public policy for building structural solutions to LGBTQ+ health disparities, we seek a scholar who brings a specific emphasis on institutional laws and policies that impact the health of LGBTQ+ populations.

Within this context, we are looking for a teacher-scholar who will conduct research at the intersection of Public Health and Gender and Sexuality Studies, applying qualitative and / or ethnographic research methods, and community-based participatory research.

The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to both teaching and research, be able to establish an active research program involving undergraduate students, and engage in service to the Department, College, and University.

We encourage applications from scholars trained in Public Health and / or Health Policy including Health and Social Behavior, Health Policy, Social Welfare, or in Social Science fields such as Sociology, Anthropology, Gender Studies, as well as in Critical Gender Theory, Trans* Studies, and / or Sexuality Studies.

This position is part of an in the College of Arts and Sciences at Santa Clara University. The College of Arts and Sciences is building a cohort of critical LGBTQ+ / queer teaching and scholarship as part of an intersectional body of research, teaching and mentoring at SCU to contribute to the broader social and political good in light of increasing anti-LGBTQ+ policies and efforts across the US and in varied global contexts.

Departments participating in the LGBTQ+ / Queer Studies Cluster Hire are Public Health, Women’s and Gender Studies, and English.

The Department of Public Health is an interdisciplinary department of teacher-scholars driven by a commitment to health equity and gender, sexual, and racial justice as foundations of public health.

The Public Health major offers two academic areas of emphasis : Health Science and Health & Society. All students are required to complete a core set of Public Health courses.

Our curriculum is based on a social determinants of health framework, understanding the nexus of social, structural, environmental, biological, and behavioral determinants of health.

  • Areas of teaching need include an upper division Qualitative Research Methods course, an upper division Health Policy course;
  • an upper division Ethics course; contributions to Departmental core courses (e.g. Introduction to Public Health, Evidence Based Public Health, and / or Senior Capstone);

and an elective or required course related to the candidate's specialty area.

Located in the heart of northern California’s Silicon Valley, SCU is a private, Catholic Jesuit liberal arts university committed to promoting social justice in a comprehensive educational setting.

This position is 40% teaching, 40% research, and 20% service. A full-time teaching load is six courses per year on a quarter system (typically 2 / 2 / 2), assuming faculty are engaged in an active scholarship program. .

Required qualifications

Doctoral degree in Public Health (PhD or DrPH), Public Policy, Social Welfare, or Social Science field (Sociology, Gender Studies, Trans* Studies, Anthropology) including graduate level training in public health, gender studies and / or public policy;

prior teaching experience; and a record of active research.

Preferred Qualifications

1) Experience with inclusive pedagogical practices that advance SCU’s goals of diversity and equity.

2) Experience teaching and mentoring a diverse population of undergraduates.

3) Post-doctoral research and / or undergraduate teaching experience are highly valued, as is community-engaged and / or applied research.

4) The candidate should have external funding to support research activities, or the potential for external funding, with a five-year research plan that can provide opportunities for involvement by undergraduates.

Responsibilities

Tenure track faculty at SCU are teaching scholars who are expected to balance teaching, research and service. This is an in-person position.

More specifically, duties include but are not limited to :

TEACHING

  • 1) Areas of teaching need include an upper-division core requirement for Health and Society majors, Qualitative Research Methods, upper division courses on Gender, Health and Sexuality;
  • Health Policy, and / or Health Ethics; contributions to Departmental core courses (e.g. Introduction to Public Health, Evidence Based Public Health, and / or Senior Capstone);

and an elective or required course otherwise related to the candidate's specialty area. SCU is on the quarter system and a typical load is two courses per quarter, lab classes count as 2 courses.

Teaching responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following :

a. Conducting and appearing at all assigned class meetings in a timely and prepared manner that demonstrates a command of the discipline and skill in presenting it effectively.

b. Assigning and evaluating written work, projects, and exams that align with course or core learning objectives and providing timely feedback to students.

c. Holding weekly office hours at times reasonably convenient to students.

d. Assigning and submitting student grades that are appropriate, accurate, and fair measures of student performance to the Office of the Registrar by the designated deadline.

e. Administering numerical and narrative evaluations in each section for all courses.

2) Develop and teach courses that contribute to curriculum development in the relevant degree program and / or the university core.

Faculty teaching university core courses should follow an approved syllabus or work with the chair to design an appropriate syllabus for submission for approval from the relevant Faculty Core Curriculum Committee.

3) Participate in assessment of student learning for courses in the department.

4) Provide informed advice and mentoring to undergraduate students.

5) Fulfill other instructional or academic duties as may be assigned by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences or by the Chair of the Environmental Studies & Sciences Department.

RESEARCH

1) Develop a research program at SCU that will result in the publication of peer-reviewed journal articles and / or other scholarly products, in line with the department's scholarship standards.

2) Develop a research program that can accommodate participation of undergraduates.

SERVICE

1) Provide effective service to the Department of Public Health, the College of Arts and Sciences, the University and profession through contributions such as service on committees, participation in professional organizations and activities, community service related to the scholar's professional expertise or association with the university, and leadership, as appropriate to rank and experience.
