Job Overview : Under the supervision of the section supervisor, the medical technologist performs all laboratory procedures in a prompt, accurate and reliable manner according to established hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
Will be trained to work in at least one other laboratory department. Supervisor of that department will determine competency level.
Scheduling in secondary department will be determined by laboratory staffing needs at the discretion of laboratory leadership.
Is responsible for reporting identified safety issues such as hazardous environments (i.e. damaged floors / walls / ceiling tiles / unsecured areas) and medical errors, etc.

- BA / BS Degree
- Graduate of an approved school of Medical Technology
- One to three years prior experience required
Preferred :
ASCP or equivalent certification preferred

Essential Functions :
- Assesses the plausibility of laboratory results through correlation of data with common physiological conditions. Confirms and verifies results through an in-depth knowledge of technique, principle and instruments.
- May lecture to Medical Technology interns or resident staff.
- Monitors established quality control procedures on analytical tests, equipment, reagents, etc. Evaluate results of quality control and implements corrective action when indicated.
- Observes established safety measures.
- Operates, calibrates, conducts performance checks and maintains clinical laboratory instruments in section.
- Performs all other appropriate tasks as required in area of responsibility and assignment.
- Performs routine and special diagnostic procedures departmentalized from section procedure manual on all body fluids to provide information for diagnosing or combating infectious disease independently under sectional supervision.
- Provides clinical orientation and supervision for students and new or less skilled personnel.
- Recognizes and corrects basic instrument malfunctions. May have to refer serious malfunctions to supervisor.
- Responsible for alerting nurse’s station, doctor’s office, etc., of all abnormal or life threatening values..
