Job Summary :
Fleet Services By Cox Automotive is currently hiring a Sr. Shop Trailer Mechanic. This is a dedicated on-site shop position, and we do not provide emergency side-of-the-road repairs. The Sr. Shop Trailer Technician will be responsible for performing certified DOT inspections, preventive maintenance inspections, light and advanced repairs, and other duties as assigned such as aluminum and chem-lite, trailer brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps and engines, liftgates, brake chambers, welding, fabrication, replacement of panels, body, and framework. Heavily relied upon for advanced diagnostics and triage of complicated repairs by Shop Trailer Technician I / II. Considered the lead on jobsites by customers and technicians. Functions as a consultant on the customer’s behalf. A successful Sr. Shop Trailer Technician complies with all company policies and achieves high-level performance metrics.
Duties :
- Always follow and comply with safe operating practices and procedures.
- Independently determine parts required for each job and interact with the Shop Parts Department to obtain them.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment; assist in cleanup at the end of each day for tools, parts, and equipment.
- Apply knowledge acquired through formal training or on-the-job experience to perform assigned work.
- Work with Service Writer to assess customer needs, provide information or assistance, and resolve problems or concerns.
- Manage concurrent assigned tasks, making effective judgments about prioritizing work-related activities and time allocations.
- Act with integrity, demonstrate honesty, and keep commitments; adhere to ethical and professional standards.
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance (“PM”), DOT inspections, and follow-up repairs on light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles in a shop environment.
- Perform routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment.
- Use hand tools, precision instruments, as well as trailer tools, welding equipment, lifts, and jacks.
- Document according to company standards and upload pictures of work performed, parts used, and findings on Repair Orders (“RO”) using company-issued devices and / or Karmak application.
- Accurately complete DOT forms and all other documentation in a timely fashion.
- Maintain a high level of productivity and work within or close to Standard Repair Times.
- Communicate with Shop Manager and support team to obtain approvals on repair estimates, retrieve purchase order numbers, and / or discuss RO findings.
- Perform all work in compliance with safety, health, and environmental policies, and federal regulations (OSHA, EPA, DOT).
- Participate in and complete all company-required safety training.
- Maintain shop-assigned service trucks, conduct safety checks, and perform daily pre- / post- trip inspections.
- Perform minor adjustments and repairs on trailer equipment and systems, including, but not limited to : aluminum and chem-lite, trailer brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps and engines, liftgates, and brake chambers.
- Diagnose, adjust, and repair trailer systems, including welding, fabrication, replacement of panels, body, and framework.
- Identify problems, determine accuracy and relevance of information, using sound judgment to evaluate alternatives.
- Inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions using test instruments such as handheld computers and pressure gauges.
- Assist Shop Trailer Technician I / II with diagnostics and parts identification.
- Perform advanced diagnostics and triage of complicated repairs by Shop Trailer Technicians I / II.
Requirements :
High School Diploma / GED and 5 years of experience in a related field. The right candidate could also have a different combination, such as any level degree / certification beyond a HS diploma / GED in a related discipline and 3 years of experience, or 7 years of experience in a related field.Possess and supply a set of hand tools necessary to perform required job duties.OEM training and certifications are preferred.Participate in and complete all company-required training.Must pass a DOT-regulated pre-employment background screening and DOT physical prior to employment.A valid DOT medical card with more than 4 months remaining may be submitted in lieu of a new physical; otherwise, a DOT physical will be required.Due to interstate operating authority commerce regulations, candidates must be at least 21 years or older.Safe drivers needed; valid driver’s license required.Skills & Abilities :
Knowledge of trailer parts and systems, including their design, use, repair, and maintenance.Understand implications of new information for problem-solving and decision-making.Ability to lift, bend, climb, stand, and walk for long periods; perform moderately heavy laboring work.Ability to exert oneself physically over long periods without tiring, including repetitive tasks.Ability to judge distances accurately.Communicate clearly and effectively with individuals and groups.Determine the type of tools and equipment needed.Use logic and reasoning to evaluate alternatives and solve problems.Required Certifications or Obtained Within 18 Months :
