MWR Recreation Specialist (Physical Readiness Support) role at Navy Region Southwest Fleet and Family Readiness (FFR)
This position is located within the Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Department of Navy Region Southwest (NRSW). Fitness and recreational programs and activities are provided to active duty, retirees, reservists, and their dependents and authorized civilian personnel.
Responsibilities
- Plans, organizes, and conducts a physical fitness program that provides conditioning programs for authorized patrons.
- Instructs individuals and groups in the proper implementation and maintenance of conditioning and training programs for aerobic fitness, muscular fitness, body composition, and flexibility training.
- Conducts micro-fit testing, including measuring individuals\' aerobic capacities, body fat percentage, height / weight ratios, strength, flexibility, muscular endurance, and blood pressure.
- Works with various command representatives in developing and implementing physical fitness programs for military personnel.
- Instructs patrons in the proper use of all equipment for training and self-monitored progress by preparing written instruction and procedures for performance of work, use of equipment, safety and wellbeing of all involved.
- May train / lead other employees in various recreation / physical fitness-related positions.
- Registers students, collects fees, maintains attendance and appropriate accounting records.
- Ensure all safety measures are observed.
- Responsible for care of equipment and security of facilities.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
Must meet Federal Employment suitability requirements and successful completion of background investigation. Background investigations are conducted using fingerprint identification and completion of background inquiry forms.Must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check. Any discrepancies must be resolved as a condition of employment.The work requires standing, sitting, walking and lifting 50 pounds or more while performing duties.Irregular working hours may be required to include early shift, late shift, evenings, weekends and holidays when the need arises.Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and First Aid certification is required.Certification from a nationally recognized agency in the area of exercise science or be able to obtain certification within 90 days of employment.Qualifications
One-year supervisory experience in a fitness center.Knowledge of various strength training machines and cardiovascular fitness equipment.Ability and knowledge to perform minor repairs and maintenance of exercise equipment.Experience with exercise physiology, exercise prescription for apparently healthy populations and for individuals with physical problems / conditions (hypertension, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, pulmonary restrictions, musculoskeletal problems, chronic back pain and pregnancy), exercise and medication interactions, electrocardiography, kinesiology, anatomy and nutrition.Minimum of one year experience conducting graded exercise tests on a stationary bike or treadmill with an electrocardiogram (EKG), performing body composition, lung function, flexibility, blood cholesterol and strength assessments.One-year experience counseling individuals on their results and recommending fitness and lifestyle changes to make healthful changes.Must be able to identify disease-related risk factors and be capable of assisting individuals with risk factor modification through exercise, diet, stress management, and other lifestyle changes.Ability to evaluate the effectiveness of all programs and to make recommendations for improving or correcting them.Ability to develop and customize presentations and address groups. Ability to speak to individuals / groups regarding fitness and lifestyle modification is required.Ability to maintain records and reports, follow verbal and written instructions, and communicate effectively with others.Education
A minimum of three years experience that demonstrates a working knowledge of the assigned program. A degree from an accredited college / university in a related field may be substituted for two years of experience. Certification in CPR and First Aid is required.

The IRC includes checks of SARP records, FFSMIS records, and installation security checks as described in applicable DoD instructions. This information is used to determine suitability for the applicant in accordance with criteria for automatic and presumptive disqualifiers, per DoDI 1402.05. DoDI 1402.05 also outlines automatic disqualification for certain offenses. Non-U.S. citizens with fewer than three years of recent residential history in the U.S. may be determined ineligible for employment. Some positions have special requirements, and selectees may be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
