The Recreation Therapist at Laurel Heights Hospital must be able to provide expertise in creating and leading recreation groups for children and adolescents with mental health and co-occurring diagnosis.
Job Responsibilities & Performance Standards :
- Reports to the Recreation Therapy Manager
- Leads evening and weekend programming, planning, and facilitating on-campus and off campus activities
- Obtains information from medical records, medical staff, family members and the patient themselves to assess capabilities, needs and interests
- Observes, analyzes, and records youth’s participation, reactions, and progress during treatment sessions, modifying treatment programs as needed
- Conducts therapy sessions to improve patient’s mental and physical well-being
- Confers with members of the treatment team to plan and evaluate therapy programs
- Develops treatment plans to meet needs of each patient, based on needs assessment, youth interests and objectives of therapy
- Encourages youth with special needs and circumstances to acquire new skills and get involved in health-promoting life skills and leisure activities, such as sports, games, music, arts and crafts, and gardening
- Instructs youth in activities and techniques, such as sports, gardening, dance, music, art or relaxation techniques, designed to meet their specific physical or psychological needs
- Plans, organizes, directs and participates in treatment programs and activities to facilitate patient’s rehabilitation, help them integrate into the community and prevent further medical problems
- Prepares and submits reports and charts to treatment team to reflect patient’s reactions and evidence of progress or regression.
Schedule is 11 am to 7 : 30 pm. Weekends maybe required

Qualifications
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation Therapy
- Experience in recreational therapy or related mental health field required
- Experience in group activity planning and facilitation, required
- Safe driving record
- Physically able to lead groups
- Experience working with adolescents in a mental health residential treatment program, preferred
- Customer service, effective written and verbal communication skills
- Driving van / bus style vehicle
- Diagnostic skills, knowledge of mental illness and its treatment
- Knowledge of safety, risk management, and emergency procedures
- Certified in CPR / First Aid procedures
- Experience working with behaviorally disordered children / adolescents, preferably those with an Autism Spectrum Disorders or related developmentally disabled
Licensure / Certification : CRTS or eligible to obtain certification within 1 year of employment. Successful completion of CPR certification, age-specific training, lifeguard certification with 1 year of employment if necessary.
