Description

The Department of Art at Smith College invites applications for a tenure-track appointment in Architecture, at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin July 2025.

We seek an architect with the vision and skills to lead and develop an architecture track in an undergraduate department at a liberal arts college that combines art history, architectural design and history, and studio art practice.

M.Arch is required, Ph.D. and / or other relevant degrees welcome. Candidates must also have a substantive record of teaching and experience in the architecture field beyond graduate school.

Faculty at Smith teach two courses per semester. The successful candidate will teach architecture as a studio practice, with an opportunity to offer, depending upon expertise and interests, classes in architectural criticism, theory, or history.

Architecture classes are housed within a department of active scholars and studio artists. Our students bring a wide range of interests to their study of architecture, drawing on curriculum in fields as diverse as landscape studies, environmental studies and policy, philosophy, religion, geology, and data sciences.

Other sites of alliance include the Lewis Global Studies Center, the Jandon Center for Community Engagement, and a consortial Five College Architectural Studies program.

We are, therefore, particularly interested in candidates whose own work and pedagogies can engage this breadth.

Along with teaching, research and / or studio practice, faculty at Smith mentor and advise undergraduates, contribute to Departmental and college committees, and may be involved in interdisciplinary and consortial programs.

Smith College also offers a generous sabbatical policy, and support for curricular development and research / practice-based travel.

Located in Northampton, MA, Smith College is the largest women's college in the country and is dedicated to excellence in teaching and research across the liberal arts.

A faculty of outstanding scholars interact with students in small classes, as advisors, and through student-faculty research projects.

Smith College offers opportunities to foster faculty success at every career stage, such as those listed here . The College is a member of the Five College Consortium with Amherst, Hampshire and Mt.

Holyoke Colleges, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Students cross-enroll and faculty cross-teach across the Five Colleges.
