SALARY RANGE : $64,427.00 - $110,756.00 USD Annually

CLASS DESCRIPTION

Develops and conducts training for entry-level and in-service police personnel. Must be qualified to teach one or more of the following subjects : interpersonal communication, report writing, crisis intervention, community policing, patrol, investigation, traffic safety, emergency medical care, defensive tactics, emergency driving, firearms, management, leadership.

Trains new hires and current members from throughout the agency. Interacts with subject matter experts from throughout the agency when developing training lessons.

Supervised by : E&T Academic Director

Interacts with :

Entry-level and in-service training staff, curriculum developers, E&T command, external stakeholders, trainees who are new hires and current members.

Individuals supervised :

No formal supervisory responsibilities but may serve as entry-level class advisor or assistant which entails oversight of police academy trainees.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develops and delivers entry-level and in-service training on various topics.
  • Plans, develops and implements training programs, to include writing and selecting lesson plans, collecting and assembling training materials, establishing the objectives and format of courses and programs, determining the needs of program participants and designing programs for effective training.
  • Evaluates training program objectives, procedures and instruction, to include reviewing the organization and content of training courses, the effectiveness of training materials and equipment, such as videos, books and audio-visual equipment, assessment of training courses by participants and the needs and background of the participants and, on the basis of the review, develops, recommends and implements modifications in training programs and courses.
  • Compiles and maintains training program records, writes reports and evaluates activities for effectiveness.
  • Develops, implements, interprets and recommends changes in training program policies and procedures.
  • Operates classroom technology including computerized multimedia projection and recording equipment.
  • Performs related work as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

REQUIREMENTS - A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and three years of experience developing and / or implementing police training.

EQUIVALENCIES Equivalent combination of education and experience. Training experience in a field other than policing will be considered.

Certification from a recognized professional body in teaching, training, or instructional systems design may be substituted for a portion of the educational or experience requirement.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of modern policing principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of training adults.
  • Knowledge of instructional design principles, techniques, materials and resources.
  • Knowledge of the organization and formats of training courses.
  • Knowledge of commonly utilized business software programs.
  • Skill in training police in modern policing principles and practices.
  • Skill in planning, developing and conducting a wide variety of training programs.
  • Skill in the utilization of common business software programs.
  • Ability to comprehend, interpret, and develop training programs and instruct others in a wide variety of subject areas.

Ability to motivate others to improve job skills, knowledge and behaviors.

  • Ability to promote training programs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to evaluate training programs and modify as needed.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
