Organ Donor Care Center Advanced Practice Provider

Experience in Transplant, or other related specialty, required. APRN candidates must hold acute-care certification.

The Advanced Practitioner - Organ Donation is an advanced practitioner with demonstrated leadership skills and clinical excellence.

The individual functions as a healthcare provider who, working collaboratively with the various teams at RUSH University Medical Center and Gift of Hope, is responsible for providing comprehensive care to potential organ donors transferred to the Donor Care Unit with the goal of maximizing organ utilization.

They demonstrate a high degree of clinical expertise in working with patients with acute and chronic illnesses commonly encountered in the brain dead and neurologically injured population.

The APP - Organ Donation will provide both donor management care as well as intraoperative care to the donor throughout the entire length of stay.

The advanced practice position demonstrates an advanced level of medical / nursing clinical knowledge, communication and interdisciplinary collaboration, professionalism, and systems-based practice.

They work with administrative, nursing, physician, and collaborating clinical services to assure safe, effective quality patient care and to promote the Donor Care Center's strategic goals.

The advanced practitioner will provide care within their scope of practice as outlined by applicable state law, licensing, regulations, institutional policy, and practice agreements.

In collaboration with the Medical and Executive Director of the Donor Care Unit, the individual will lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of donor organ utilization to ensure donors are managed to optimize organ viability and function and maximize gifts to save more lives and optimize organs transplanted per donor.

The individual will utilize evidence-based practice implementation experience and work collaboratively with transplant centers and OPOs nationally to improve the donor management processes.

The individual will be trained by the Medical Director and Executive Director on organ donor medication delivery practices and will escalate clinical concerns to the Medical Director and Executive Director as needed.

The individual will develop and maintain essential relationships with medical and administrative leaders at transplant centers and focus on improving the donation and transplantation of organs with Gift of Hope staff and leadership to improve the number and quality of organs.

The Advanced Practitioner will lead and participate in policy development, quality improvement initiatives, and training of donor management strategies while maintaining regulatory compliance and monitoring outcome measures.

The individual works collaboratively with the Executive Director, Medical Director, department managers and others to provide advanced clinical practice expertise, implement evidence-based practices, oversee and improve clinical donation practices.

Patient Care

1. Performs and documents patient history and physical examinations.

2. Diagnoses, treats, and manages health conditions appropriate to NP specialty and credentialing and privileges.

3. Prescribes medications, including controlled substances to the extent delegated including non-pharmacologic treatment modalities.

4. Orders, interprets, and performs laboratory and other diagnostic tests.

5. Makes referrals which are indicated to provide cost effective and quality care.

6. Performs advanced practice procedures in accordance with accepted standards and are consistent with the skills and training of the nurse practitioner as granted by privileging.

Medical / Clinical Knowledge

7. Utilizes research and evidenced based practice to guide decision making to ensure the highest quality patient care

8. Demonstrates advanced critical thinking in the care and management of patients within their clinical area

9. Provides education and support to nursing staff, Students, house staff, and other members of the health care team

10. Assumes a leadership role in clinical and system analytical problem solving and advancement of clinical practice.

Practice-based Learning and Improvement

11. Leads or participates in interdisciplinary process improvement projects.

12. Participates and or acts as lead investigator in quality improvement / research activities which require the clinical expertise and critical thinking of a licensed independent practitioner.

Interpersonal and Communication Skills

13. Demonstrates interpersonal and communication skills that establish and maintain professional relationships with coworkers, and other members of the healthcare team

14. Work to establish a relationship with the patient characterized by mutual respect, empathy and collaboration.

Systems-based Practice

15. Collaborates with interprofessional team members to meet patient needs and ensure continuity of care.

16. Serves as a consultant and mentor to health care team members in solving patient or care delivery system problems.

Professionalism

17. Demonstrates compliance with documentation and coding requirements.

18. Participates in all required focused and ongoing professional practice evaluation activities (i.e. FPPE and OPPE) and annual performance evaluation.

19. Demonstrates accountability for own professional practice, including progress toward achievement of annual goals.

20. Maintains compliance with hospital and medical staff bylaws, policies, and rules and regulations governing APN privileging and credentialing.

Other Information

Required Job Qualifications :

Current State of Illinois Physician Assistant Licensure.

Current Certification from National Certification Commission for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).

Degree from an ARC-PA (or predecessor) accredited PA Program.

Current State of Illinois Registered Nurse (RN) and Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) Licensure.

Current Nurse Practitioner Certification from a national certifying organization Graduate from an accredited nurse practitioner educational program

CPR certification required; ACLS PALS or NRP certification required in specific specialty areas

A high level of analytical ability.

Ability to collaborate with critical care teams and organ / transplantation professionals.

Ability to respond and adapt to an ever-changing, complex environment.

Strong innovator with the ability to improve new and current processes.

Good interpersonal and communication skills are required in order to lead, teach and interact effectively with healthcare personnel and families.

Knowledge of electronic medical record (i.e. Epic)

Ability to interact effectively with others in high-stress situations.

The ability to check documents for errors, use a keyboard to enter or retrieve data, and closely examine specimen, images or reports.

Physical Demands :

Ability to walk throughout the Medical Center and to be standing or walking most of the day

Lifting or carrying objects 35-40lbs. and lifting and positioning patients, some of whom may exceed 300 lbs.

Work conditions include performing procedures where carelessness could result in injury or illness and / or contact with potentially infectious materials and / or strong chemical agents.
