Speech-Language Pathologist Clinical Fellowship

The Speech-Language Pathologist Clinical Fellow will perform screenings, assess patient condition per ordering physician prescriptions, and design therapy and treatment plans to help the patient develop necessary communication and / or swallowing skills.

The Speech-Language Pathologist Clinical Fellow will be knowledgeable in all patient care duties and documentation requirements for the following departments of Cayuga Medical Center : Emergency, Acute, Inpatient Rehabilitation, Outpatient Therapy Services, and Imaging for Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Studies.

The Speech-Language Pathologist Clinical Fellow will be caring, empathetic, and knowledgeable about communication and swallowing conditions and therapies.

Roles and Responsibilities :

Diagnosing, treating, and preventing speech, language, cognitive-linguistic, voice and swallowing

disorders.

Creating treatment and therapy plans to suit the individualized needs of a diverse population of

patients.

Performing screenings to detect speech, language, cognitive-linguistic, voice and swallowing

deficits. Recommending skilled speech-language pathology evaluation orders, if / when appropriate.

  • Referring clients to additional medical or educational services, as appropriate.
  • Educating patients, family members, and professional colleagues about communication and

swallowing disorders and causes, including disabilities and traumatic events.

  • Keeping detailed records relating to patient conditions, care plans, therapies, and progress.
  • Documenting information and writing reports with details regarding patient billing, insurance,

evaluations, progress, treatment and discharge of patients.

  • Remaining flexible regarding work schedule to meet client staffing requirements.
  • Performing related duties and responsibilities as required.
  • Delivering age appropriate care for the patient population.
  • Working collaboratively with professionals from many other disciplines.
  • Attending and participating in scheduled staff and interdisciplinary patient care meetings.
  • Is flexible in assuming other appropriate responsibilities not noted above.

Required Skills and Experience :

  • Master's Degree in Speech-Language Pathology
  • Valid Professional License to practice Speech-Language Pathology in the state of New York
  • Current certification in American Heart Association Basic Life Support
  • Experience with certain conditions or working with specific age groups may be preferred (e.g.
  • Parkinson Disease, NICU Feeding, Head and Neck Cancer)
  • Strong understanding of communication-related conditions, causes, and treatments
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with healthcare databases (following education and training, as needed)
  • Must complete yearly mandatory safety inservices and / or trainings
  • Must complete yearly Healthstream e-Learning Courses
  • Must complete yearly Occupational Health clearances
  • Must complete yearly mandatory departmental competencies for Inpatient Rehabilitation and

Outpatient Therapy Services

  • Must adhere to patient safety "Red Rules" and infection prevention policies
  • Preserves and protects patient and client confidentiality in all situations and with all documentation
  • Attends and participates in continuing education programs to monitor proficiency, expands current

knowledge and enhance professional excellence

Willingly shares knowledge and provides clinical orientation to other members of the staff

Physical Requirements :

Able to stand for long periods of time; requires manual dexterity and good eye-hand coordination. Able to perform light lifting, up to 40 pounds.
