Pittsburgh Life Sciences Alliance (PLSA) is dedicated to making greater Pittsburgh a global life sciences leader and economic engine at the intersection of the region’s unique clinical, research, manufacturing, and technology strengths.

Job Purpose :

The Community Manager will serve as a vital link between PLSA, its constituents, and the broader life sciences community in the Pittsburgh area.

This role is responsible for developing and implementing strategies to engage and expand our community, fostering collaboration, innovation, and growth within the local life sciences sector.

This Community Manager will create valuable networking opportunities, manage communications, and provide support to ensure that constituents gain maximum benefit from their involvement with PLSA.

Principal (Essential) Duties :

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with community members, stakeholders, and partners within the life sciences ecosystem, specifically companies in the industry and economic development and nonprofit partners.
  • Organize and execute networking events, workshops, and seminars that facilitate knowledge sharing and collaboration among members.
  • Actively engage with community members through regular communications, surveys, and feedback sessions to gather insights and address community needs.
  • Manage relationships with external vendors and oversee distribution of content across various platforms including newsletters, social media, and the PLSA website.
  • Ensure consistent and effective communication of PLSA’s values, upcoming events, and opportunities within the community.
  • Serve as the primary contact point for community inquiries and provide timely responses to foster a responsive and inclusive community environment.
  • Review membership models for similar organizations and drive the development of a model for PLSA based on best practices and regional needs.
  • Collaborate with the President and the leadership team to identify opportunities for new programs and services that benefit the community.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of educational and professional development programs tailored to the needs of the life sciences community.
  • Track and report on community engagement activities and outcomes, leveraging data to inform the development of initiatives and enhance strategies aimed at driving satisfaction and increasing engagement.
  • Analyze community trends to anticipate industry shifts and align PLSA’s offerings with community needs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

  • Able to communicate effectively about industry-specific topics and engage with high-level stakeholders, including donors, board members, and community partners, fostering meaningful relationships and advocating for the organization's mission and goals.
  • Excellent organizational skill; competence in planning executing, and managing events such as workshops, seminars, and networking meetups.
  • Able to articulate ideas clearly and persuasively in both written and verbal form. Skilled in crafting engaging content for newsletters, social media, and other communication platforms.
  • Basic knowledge of marketing principles to assist in promoting community events and membership benefits. Able to collaborate with others to develop materials that resonate with current and potential members.
  • Skilled in managing multiple projects simultaneously with attention to detail and deadlines.
  • Able to analyze community engagement data and extract actionable insights to improve community initiatives and strategies.

Familiar with tools and platforms for data analysis.

  • Able to work in a collaborative, team-oriented environment to achieve goals.
  • Proficiency in CRM software and other digital tools to engage with the community and manage relationships.
  • Understanding of key trends, challenges, and opportunities within the life sciences sector, especially relevant to the Pittsburgh area.

Experience / Education Requirements :

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, Marketing, Business Administration, or related field. Relevant experience may be substituted for education.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in community management, outreach, or related roles preferably within the life sciences or a related field.
  • Knowledge of the life sciences industry and its key players in the Pittsburgh area is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and coordinate events and programs.
  • Experience managing relationships with external partners and to drive marketing and communications strategies.
  • Experience in managing projects that involved multiple partners is highly preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and familiar with CRM platforms.

This role will require some local and regional travel. Option to work remotely when travel is not required.

Working Conditions / Physical Demands :

  • Travel up to 25% to sites beyond the Pittsburgh area.
  • Perform light work - exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently and / or lifting no more than 20 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds.
  • Ability to see, hear, talk and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity and visual acuity; sit, stand, walk and other similar tasks requiring physical activity.
  • Ability to operate standard office / computer equipment.
  • Must provide and be licensed to operate a car.
