In this Providence, RI based position at Vertex Cell and Genetic Therapies (VCGT) our research teams bring together the best biology, technologies, and enhanced manufacturing capabilities to bring cutting-edge transformative therapies to patients as quickly as possible.
Reporting to the Director, Translational Engineering, the Senior Scientist (Chemist) role will focus on the design, synthesis, and characterization of polymers and novel compounds with the ultimate goal of functionalizing and / or conjugating small molecules, peptides and proteins onto implantable medical devices.
The position is on-site in Providence, R.I.
Key Duties and Responsibilities :
Perform lab-scale polymer synthesis, modification, purification, formulation and characterization.
Design and synthesize novel compounds that can be functionalized to conjugate to polymers / biomaterials.
Design and execute various conjugation strategies to perform site-specific chemical modifications / conjugations to small molecules, peptides and proteins including antibodies.
Develop and synthesize biomaterials for the coating of porous substrates.
Source polymers / biomaterials with desired properties, formulate and optimize coating of porous substrates to enhance biological outcomes of implantable devices.
Develop an internal and external network of research partners / collaborators to complement competencies in the above-mentioned research areas.
Strong analytical and experimental skills for characterization and development of polymers and coatings to integrate into design feedback (PY-MS, FTIR, DSC, SEM, TGA, surface tension, viscosity, UV-vis, particle size analysis, etc.).
Contribute to multiple projects as technical lead including managing and facilitating communication, timeline management, information exchange, and workflow among internal and external research team members as well as mentorship of junior scientists.
Knowledge and Skills :
Demonstrated knowledge in polymer synthesis and biomaterials characterization.
Experience in chemical modification and functionalization of biomaterials for medical devices, including extractables and leachables characterization.
Knowledge of polymeric porous substrates.
Demonstrated excellence in planning, executing, and analyzing experiments.
Effectively communicates project outcomes to multi-disciplinary audiences through presentations and reports.
Education and Experience :
PhD in Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engi neering or related discipline with 2+ years (post-degree) of relevant industry experience.
5 plus years’ experience, preferably 3 years in industry working with implantable biomedical devices.
