Public Works Director

The City of Indianola is currently welcoming applications for the position of Public Works Director. The City of Indianola, IA (pop. 16,069) is a growing community with a historic downtown, located approximately 15 minutes south of Des Moines. It is a safe community with Midwestern values, friendly people and excellent schools. Indianola, which is home to Simpson College, the world-renowned Des Moines Metro Opera and the National Balloon Museum and U.S. Ballooning Hall of Fame, is known for its excellent access to outdoor activities, a nice trail system, five major parks and two golf courses. The community welcomes thousands of visitors annually who come to Indianola to enjoy major events such as the National Balloon Classic, the Warren County Fair and other events.

This position is responsible for a number of tasks, including, but not limited to :

  • Provide strategic leadership and management for assigned personnel, including training, performance evaluation, and operational planning.
  • Oversee all departmental operations, including streets, sanitary and storm sewers, traffic control, sidewalks, snow and ice removal, and brush facility management.
  • Oversee the maintenance, replacement, and operational readiness of departmental and assigned fleet, equipment, and facilities, ensuring cost-effective asset management and alignment with service delivery goals.
  • Lead capital improvement planning, budgeting and financial management, communication, design, construction, and quality control in partnership with consulting professionals and contractors.
  • Develop and administer the department's operating and capital budgets, ensuring fiscal responsibility and alignment with city goals.
  • Serve as a key partner in public improvement and development processes, including plan review, right-of-way management, infrastructure integration, financial considerations, and stakeholder collaboration.

The successful candidate will have :

  • Seven (7) years of progressively responsible work-related experience with at least three (3) years of supervisory experience required.
  • College degree in construction management / administration, public / business administration, civil engineering or a closely related field required.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain an Iowa Driver's License.
  • Must be available for off-work assignments, meetings, and activities.
  • The position's salary range is $122,812.44-$165,930.87. The anticipated starting salary is $ 122,812.44 to midpoint $145,159.36, depending on qualifications. The position also comes with a comprehensive benefits package that includes vacation, sick leave, personal leave, life insurance and AD&D, short and long-term disability, health, dental, and vision insurance, retirement, tuition reimbursement, and an employee assistance program.
