Job Description

Under general supervision, the Porter Assistant Supervisor performs the duties of a Porter to maintain a large institution in a clean and orderly condition.

They also supervise the work of a crew of porters assigned to clean and maintain institutional buildings.

Examples of Important and Essential Duties

The essential functions of a 2738 Porter Assistant Supervisor include, but are not limited to :

  • Performs the duties of a Porter such as sweeping and cleaning floors, stairways, scrubbing and stripping floors, vacuuming, spot cleaning and shampooing carpets;
  • Assigns duties and schedules work assignments for a crew of Porters manually and / or with the use of a computer;
  • Ensures adequate inventory of cleaning materials and equipment;
  • Inspects assigned areas and the work of Porters to ensure that cleaning, safety and infection control standards are met and documents their work;
  • Checks time sheets and assignments and reports issues to immediate supervisor;
  • Completes and maintains various forms and records;
  • Trains and instructs new Porter personnel by explaining and demonstrating cleaning methods and techniques;
  • Participates in orientation and in-service training;
  • Supervises and / or participates in the transportation, setup, and arrangement of furniture, equipment, and other items throughout the institution;
  • May supervise and / or perform minor repairs and adjustments to tools and equipment used in the role, and reports the need for significant repairs or replacements; and
  • May perform the duties of Porter Supervisor I for limited periods.

The Porter Assistant Supervisor performs other related duties as assigned / required.

Working Conditions : The Porter Assistant Supervisor is responsible for supervising and performing cleaning tasks that involve exposure to hazardous cleaning chemicals, blood, bodily fluids, and medical waste, as well as interaction with patients with contagious diseases.

This work requires adherence to approved safety procedures and the use of special protective clothing and equipment. The role also demands physical strength and endurance for heavy lifting, standing, bending, pulling, and pushing for extended periods, both day and night, often in environments that may be disagreeable.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE : Two (2) years of verifiable experience in an institutional setting as a porter, janitor, or custodian, performing all of the following duties :

  • Floor and carpet maintenance;
  • Furniture, equipment and wall cleaning or disinfecting;
  • Hazardous waste and trash disposal; and
  • Movement of furniture and other equipment

Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted

One-year fulltime employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week).

The MQSQ will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.

Multiple-Choice Written Examination (Weight : 100%)

Candidates that meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in 2738 Porter Assistant Supervisor exam that is designed to measure the knowledge, skills, and abilities in job related areas which may include but not be limited to : Knowledge of safety procedures;

Technical knowledge; Supervision; Interpersonal ability; Reading comprehension; and / or Mathematical Ability.

Candidates must achieve a passing score on the exam in order to continue in the selection process and will be placed on the confidential eligible list in rank order according to their final score

Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions.

Certification

The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be the Rule of 10 Scores.

The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be 12 months and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.
