The Director of Business Development manages, oversees and develops initiatives and programs to better promote business development at Polsinelli.
This role will join the Senior Leadership team of Polsinelli's Marketing Department, and will work alongside the senior leaders to deliver excellent client service to the firm in the areas of managing and developing team members, aligning strategic business development initiatives with the firm's growth practices and industry focuses, continue to evolve best-in-class delivery of client facing content and provide strategic direction for maximizing ROI on client events.
Duties and Responsibilities :
Acts as a key advisor and thought partner on all aspects of business development as well as operational areas of the marketing function.
He or she must possess a strong background in marketing, business development, and management to proactively identify opportunities for improved excellence for the firm's Marketing Department.
This position will play the vital role of providing and maintaining a "big picture viewpoint" of all internal and external happenings that impact strategy, client development, and ensuring that the CMO is immediately kept up to date.
He or she is also responsible for overseeing the day-to-day activities of the business development function, identifying opportunities to streamline processes, bringing new ideas to improve performance, and introducing best practices.
This individual is responsible for ensuring that everyday business development activities and tactical deliverables meet and often exceed internal client expectations.
Business Development
- Act as a thought leader to the CMO on strategic direction of business development at Polsinelli
- Interfaces on the CMO's behalf with Department and Divisional Chairs, Practice Group Chairs and others across the Firm to ensure ongoing and successful execution
- Learn the value proposition, messaging and positioning for Polsinelli key practices and create strategies around them
- Continue to evolve materials to put forth customized, responsive and sophisticated responses to client requests
- Learn firm tools to understand client data to help drive strategy in the market
- Manage Department Marketing Managers (DMMs) and their teams to continue to grow their skills and expertise in business development and law firm marketing
- Work alongside the Senior Manager of Client Experience to drive business development processes and protocols for Polsinelli Marque events, like BLI, HealthCare Deal Makers Conference and our WIPL sponsorship (among others)
- Identify innovative opportunities that result in positive business results
- Work with CMO and DMMs to Develop, optimize and track annual department budgets
- Develop and sustain an understanding of key industry issues, firm operations, and client dynamics to identify potential impact on client service requirements
- Oversees the development of messages that communicate with various stakeholders across the organization. Determines best ways to partner, collaborate and support ongoing brand communication efforts
- Ability to professionally interface with firm management / executive committee
- Ensure that the Firm possesses the correct tools (including databases, AI tools, and other technology) to collect, warehouse, and utilize information on clients, prospective clients, referral sources, alumni and competitors
- Provide guidance to the Firm in the development and review of marketing policies that will support the achievement of the Firm's goals and enhance the competitive advantage of the Firm
Marketing Team
- Work as a collaborator and partner with the other senior members of the Marketing Team to strategize on department goals, team development and general operations.
- Provide weekly reporting to the CMO
- Serve as a leader on the team, offering professional development and guidance to all team members including helping to plan marketing retreats and other team meetings
- Works with Marketing / DMM team members to design and implement processes and programs which elevate the overall quality and efficiency of Marketing deliverables.
Requirements :
- Minimum 15 years marketing experience, with emphasis in legal marketing business development, legal marketing, market strategy, and exposure to breadth of marketing and business development functional areas
- Previous experience in a director and / or managerial role
- Demonstrated experience in process improvement, and supervision over multiple processes in a demanding environment
- Experience managing team in collaborative environment. Demonstrated comfort level coaching and developing team
- Strong general business orientation required and experience working with owners desired. Must have clear grasp of marketing function's role in driving business acquisition and retention
- Understanding of and experience in developing brand strategy, experience in developing and writing content for strategy plans and client facing material.
Strong writing skills a must
- Confident presence working with senior management and strong presentation skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills are critical - demonstrated ability to work with and influence multiple stakeholders to achieve optimal results.
- Exceptional business acumen and professionalism, a strong ability to identify and understand marketplace trends
- Must be responsive to inquiries from internal clients, diplomatic in answering questions or evaluating proposed ideas and thorough when offering feedback concerning results or issues that arise during projects
