CAMBA’s Cure Violence Program works with 16 24 year old at risk youths who are or may have potentially been involved in street violence, community residents, businesses and community-based organizations to implement Cure Violence : The Campaign to Stop the Shooting.

Cure Violence is a public health strategy to reduce and prevent shootings and killings. This program will focus on a defined area identified as a hot spot in Brownsville, Brooklyn for shooting violence within the 73rd Precinct.

The program works to prevent gun violence by : 1) mediating conflicts that may end in gun violence, 2) changing the thinking of individuals who are most at risk of being victims or perpetrators of violence, and 3) working closely with a broad coalition of local partners to promote a visible community-wide message that shooting is unacceptable behavior.

Reports To : Assistant Program Manager

Location : BIVO North (1755 Broadway Brooklyn NY 11207)

BIVO South ( 1667 Pitkin Avenue Brooklyn NY 11212)

What The Community Coordinator Does :

  • Serve as the primary representative of the CMS site to the specific neighborhood, precinct, and catch area.
  • Liaise with community-based organizations and city government to build synergy and expand programmatic offerings.
  • Coordinate themed weekends of action focused on public safety, facilitating collaboration among community organizations and affected populations.
  • Create and coordinate youth engagement events with our various community partners.
  • Attend and participate in community-based meetings such as Community Board Meetings, NYCHA Tenant Association meetings, Mayor’s Action Plan for Neighborhood Safety (MAP) meetings, Local Neighborhood STAT (NSTAT), and MAP development stakeholder meetings.
  • Identify new community groups and public or private initiatives to build relationships and apply for funding opportunities.
  • Coordinate and promote anti-gun violence workshops and pro-social events where community stakeholders and agencies collaborate to communicate and deliver services in targeted neighborhoods.
  • Work within the Brownsville / Oceanhill community and populations who may be at increased risk for violence.
  • Produce events and manage community coalitions.
  • Identify emerging community issues affecting public safety to help guide the site’s response.
  • Work alongside City agencies to conduct briefings and community meetings outlining city services to key community and faith leader stakeholders.
  • Assist in organizing responses to conflicts and shootings
  • Help facilitate the BIVO hiring panel process including outreach and recruitment for potential site staff and / or participants.
  • Create outreach materials, talking points, and presentation materials for BIVO site.
  • Provide all required information for weekly / monthly / quarterly / annual reports.
  • Coordinate activities and events with local Cornerstone & Beacon centers and integrate services with local CBOs and Community Center programs to streamline referrals.
  • Outreach and market the program within the school.

Minimum Education / Experience Required :

  • Bachelor’s degree (B. A. or B. S.) and one (1) year of applicable experience, or
  • Associate’s degree (A.S) and two (2) years of applicable experience, or
  • High School Diploma or HSE and three (3) years of applicable experience

Other Requirements :

  • Equally at home conversing with gang members, community activists, law enforcement personnel, and public officials.
  • Familiarity with the Canarsie community challenges of teens and young adults there; strongly preferred.
  • Understanding of sensitivity and commitment to working with families of youth that have experienced gun related trauma

Compensation : $52,000-$55,000 annually

When salary ranges are listed, the range would represent the low and high end for the applicable position & program. The salary offered would be based on various factors unique to each program and candidate.

This includes but is not limited to experience, education, budget and / or program size, internal equity, skills and other factors that may be required for the position and organization.

Status : Full-time (35 hours per week)
