DESCRIPTION

Reporting to the Senior Executive Director of Development for University Development (SEDOD-UD), and working closely with the Dean of the Jacobs School of Engineering, UC San Diego seeks a proven leader and skilled fundraiser to serve as the Executive Director of Development, Jacobs School of Engineering (EDOD-JSOE).

As the senior professional for the Jacobs School, the EDOD-JSOE will have responsibility for the leadership, design and implementation of comprehensive fundraising initiatives to benefit the Jacobs School.

The EDOD-JSOE will work closely with the Dean, the SEDOD-UD, and appropriate faculty leadership to determine fundraising priorities and to manage staff and resources to maximize fundraising success.

The EDOD-JSOE will be expected to effectively administer and supervise a complex and multi-faceted unit, including the leadership and building out of a high performing team, implementing complex donor strategies, allocating and monitoring budget resources, maintaining and updating all data relating to the department's financial achievements, campaign tracking, prospect management, and proposal development.

The position will be expected to understand the priorities of the Jacobs School, as defined by the Dean, and provide leadership and oversight for all fundraising programs for JSOE, including principal and major gifts, annual giving programs, and volunteer activities as determined by the SEDOD-UD.

The EDOD-JSOE will work directly with the SEDOD-UD, Dean, faculty and staff to identify programs and donors for funding opportunities, to strategize and facilitate opportunities for principal and major gift fundraising, and to create environments that will enhance communication and encourage collaboration across the entire campus.

The EDOD-JSOE will participate as a member of the Associate Vice Chancellor-University Development's (AVC-UD) Management Team.

The EDOD-JSOE manages the Jacobs School's most capable and generous donors in considering transformational gifts to support the Jacobs School of Engineering.

The EDOD strategically designs and leads the principal and major gift programs resulting in philanthropic support through the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of high-level prospects for the Jacobs School of Engineering.

The EDOD-JSOE will create a customer centered development operation that is responsive to Jacobs School faculty and staff as well as to donors, prospects and development colleagues campus-wide.

The EDOD-JSOE will be expected to maintain a personal portfolio and to provide leadership, mentoring and effective evaluation for Jacobs School development staff.

QUALIFICATIONS

Proven success as a development officer in a highly sophisticated donor-centered fundraising environment as a direct line fundraiser with ten or more years development experience.

Expert working knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor relations, and public relations concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques.

Proven experience in the full spectrum of development including : gift policies, solicitations, stewardship, donor recognition and administration.

Solid track history of securing principal level gifts, staffing senior-level administrators and closing gifts ($1M) from individuals, corporations and foundations, both local and national.

Expert written and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen, to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the organization and with outside constituencies.

Expert skills in making persuasive and compelling presentations of goals and objectives for a location in order to secure gifts.

Ability to communicate effectively one-on-one or in group settings, taking into account differences in social, cultural, professional, and educational backgrounds.

Demonstrated experience in hiring, training, supervising, coaching, mentoring, evaluating, and disciplining staff.

Expert organizational, analytical and critical thinking skills. Expert project / program management skills, including skills in setting and meeting program / project goals and objectives within budget and time constraints.

Expert level skills in maintaining confidentiality. Strong sense of ethical conduct that will inspire confidence and motivation with the proven ability to persuade colleagues and donor prospects, while maintaining confidentiality in all matters as they relate to sensitive donor relations issues.

Demonstrated competency and commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion. Demonstrated understanding of the importance of ensuring an equitable, inclusive, and diverse working environment, with the ability to work as a part of a diverse and collaborative team.

Excellent communication skills to include effective and persuasive writing, public speaking and interpersonal skills. Ability to maintain consistent and positive communication with the Advancement and campus leadership

Demonstrated understanding of the philosophy of quality services and the group process with proven aptitude for working as part of a highly collaborative team.

Proven record of writing proposals for a significant project / gift ($1M+) directed to individuals and foundations / corporations.

Demonstrated ability to develop and implement persuasive cultivation ideas and techniques and provide critical analysis, using sound judgment with realistic expectations for prospects and donors.

Expert knowledge of all aspects of the location, including current issues of concern for both the campus and / or throughout higher education / healthcare, generally.

Expert knowledge of the location, including its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure.

Expert knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, etc.

Strong written and oral communication skills that demonstrate correct grammar usage, syntax and format, with the ability to make oral presentations and / or interpret various related programs to potential donors.

Knowledge of principles and practices of developing and utilizing volunteer leadership and organizing and maintaining volunteer support organizations.

Demonstrated skill in the technique of donor prospect research with the ability to extract the pertinent / critical information from various documents.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Job offer is contingent on clear Background Check.

Must have access to reliable transportation.

Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range : $112,100 - $216,500 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent : $53.69 - $103.69

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.

The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position.

The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
