Job Description

This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for an Industrial Hygienist for our Minneapolis, MN office. Be involved in projects with our Federal Programs Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client's objectives and solves their challenges.

Your Impact

  • Collect, identify, and compile observational, spatial, and environmental data from samples of asbestos, lead-based paint, indoor air, mold and other matrices for projects, investigations, and surveys;
  • Perform industrial hygiene (IH) surveys and audits, indoor air quality (IAQ) and noise assessments;
  • Perform surveys on asbestos-containing building material (ACBM), lead-based paint (LBP) and mold surveys and investigations;
  • Perform asbestos abatement and fiber release assessments;
  • Perform environmental investigations and sampling;
  • Conduct environmental assessments;
  • Develop reports related to assessments and investigations; and
  • Support Industrial Hygiene, Health & Safety (H&S) and environmental project needs in Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and other Midwest U.

S. states and cities or other U.S. locations.

Other Ancillary Duties and Responsibilities may include :

  • Meet with regulatory and or permit agencies for guidance on requirements or discuss specific permits conditions and requirements;
  • Conduct ACM / LBP testing for abatement and demolition permits;
  • Develop necessary permit backup documentation, including applicable environmental documents;
  • Follow-up with regulatory agencies to ensure timely issuance of permits;
  • Reach out to and coordinate with the full Project Team, consisting of engineers, owners, Contractors, and Project Coordinators to facilitate permit acceptance and organizing the necessary submittals to City, State and other review agencies.
  • Review permits close out documentation for compliance requirements;
  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements, statistical analysis, and reporting;
  • Perform professional environmental science work and assist with conducting investigations, inspections, and environmental studies and surveys to gain further information on a particular environmental problem or issue, verify site characteristics, and / or to plan for future environmental needs;
  • Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, accurate reports, and illustrations for the interpretation or presentation of data, findings, or analyses;
  • Write technical reports summarizing research with findings and conclusions, generating complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems, field / work site notes, and software;
  • Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures which include but are not limited to, the maintenance of sample collection, laboratory documentation, written procedures, monitoring systems, and logbooks;
  • Maintain and calibrate equipment and tools, troubleshooting and reporting on malfunctions, and performing inventory control activities;
  • Assist in the analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of environmental data obtained during field investigations, offering input with developing action plans for low to mid-level threat mitigation and permitting activities projects to minimize impacts to the health of the environment and the population;
  • Manage and coordinate project-related task activities in support of Client needs, through various contracts, including working with subcontractors.
  • Support emergency response related activities in support of urgent client issues such as damage assessments, safety assessments, and response to natural disasters that impact operations.
  • Work with cross-functional teams in executing project work;
  • The potential for growth into task and project management;
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures; and
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science or equivalent.
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant general occupational safety and health / industrial hygiene experience including the performance of industrial hygiene (IH) surveys & audits;
  • indoor air quality (IAQ) and noise assessments; asbestos-containing building material (ACBM), lead-based paint (LBP) and mold surveys and investigations;
  • asbestos abatement and fiber release assessments; environmental investigations, conduct environmental sampling of soil and groundwater, EH&S / occupational safety training;

and / or medical monitoring program oversight.

  • Prior consulting experience and working with clients having a united work force environment with an understanding of the work activities with an involvement in occupational safety and health, asbestos / lead-based paint, IAQ, and other health and safety, and emergency response and preparedness projects.
  • Experience conducting site assessments as they relate to potential environmental impacts.
  • Perform health and safety assessment and reviews or audits.
  • Requires up to 20% travel, including the potential for overnight trips.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proposal writing and cost estimating experience. Knowledge of relevant environmental laws, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Capable interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a scientific and non-scientific audience.
  • Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and managing multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, work independently, and comply with company policies.
  • Moderate proficiency with business writing, office automation and communication software, technology, and tools.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, and identify the most effective manner to accomplish objectives of assigned projects.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug / alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Ability to interface with, direct and manage subcontractors during all phases of a project from quotes to reporting.
  • Relocation assistance is not available for this position.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Master's Degree.
  • 40-Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER).
  • Capable of obtaining credentials such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), and / or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).
  • Current asbestos and / or lead-based paint certifications or the ability to obtain current credentials within 1 year.
  • Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training.
  • Experience in conducting or supporting Phase I Environmental Site Assessments and other environmental real property due diligence activities.
