Departmental Overview

Berkeley Public Health (BPH) aims to improve population health, especially for the most vulnerable, through interdisciplinary collaborations, preeminent education, and transformational research.

The Center for Targeted Machine Learning and Causal Inference (CTML) in the School of Public Health's Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics is an interdisciplinary hub that brings together data scientists, statisticians, computer scientists, and health professionals.

Its mission is to improve the research and practice of health sciences through developing and applying Targeted Learning analytics to solve urgent health challenges and making these tools accessible to a broader audience.

Position Summary

The Center for Targeted Machine Learning and Causal Inference (CTML), within the School of Public Health's Biostatistics & Epidemiology Division, is an interdisciplinary research center for advancing, implementing, and disseminating statistical methodology to address problems arising in public health and clinical medicine.

Mirroring the last few years, CTML's project portfolio continues to grow and includes partnerships with Novo Nordisk, Gilead, NIH, NSF, Gates Foundation, and Blue Shield.

Responsibilities

  • Provides consultation to research team to develop and evaluate instruments, methods, tools and training.
  • Designs, coordinates and conducts research studies, data collection tools of broad complexity and impact. Prepares reports, scientific publications and articles for publication.
  • Compiles and interprets research data. Contributes to formulation and prioritization of interventions based on data.
  • Presents and interprets the results of research findings.
  • Develops database tool for tracking research data and assists in transmission and presentation of data.
  • Provides technical assistance on data management and use of research data to analyze and interpret findings.
  • May lead implementation of data management systems.
  • Leading independent statistical analysis, methodological research, and writing peer-reviewed manuscripts in support of academic-pharmacology industry collaboration projects.
  • The candidate will contribute to paper submissions involving scientific writing, reviewing data analyses, literature management, and helping to contribute to the interpretation of results.
  • Participate in professional development, conferences, and provides public relations support.
  • Considers submitting research-related findings to local and international conferences, and participates in those conferences through poster or oral presentations when appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • This may include scientific input on matters when requested by CTML faculty, proofreading scientific documents, or informal meetings with members of the research team to discuss research matters.

Required Qualifications

  • Academic background and in-depth knowledge of statistics, causal inference, machine learning, and computer science.
  • Advanced skills associated with statistical analysis, database management and software development programming.
  • Advanced ability to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing.
  • Advanced project management skills.
  • Ability to lead and influence within and external to project team.
  • Advanced research skills at a level to evaluate alternate solutions and project likelihood of success and to develop alternate solutions or recommendations.
  • Advanced ability to think creatively to recommend action steps or strategize solutions relative to research.
  • Advanced skills in analysis and consultation.
  • R programming, statistical computing, Python programming, and package creation ability.
  • Knowledge of causal inference and machine learning methodologies, design of clinical trials, and analysis of electronic health record data.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working skills in data preprocessing / cleaning, statistical analysis, systems programming, database design and data security measures, especially regarding large datasets.
  • PhD degree in biostatistics or related field and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Master's degree in related area or related field and / or equivalent experience / training.

Salary & Benefits

This is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) exempt career position, which is paid monthly and eligible for UC Benefits.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs.

It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $109,200.00 - $133,850.00.
