Southwestern University’s Art and Art History Department in the Sarofim School of Fine Arts invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of Art position with a sculpture emphasis to begin August 2024.
Southwestern’s intimate and dynamic Studio Art department, recognized annually in the Fiske Guide as among the top small art departments nationally, seeks to educate students as global citizens who approach art theory and practice through the interdisciplinary perspective characteristic of a broad-based liberal arts education.
We seek a professionally active artist who is enthusiastically drawn to the teaching profession and whose artistic production demonstrates potential for national recognition in the field.
Applicants should be knowledgeable and proficient in the conceptual and technical aspects of sculpture and experimental drawing.
Candidates must possess an M.F.A. degree from an accredited institution with an emphasis in sculpture. Successful candidates should be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and have the knowledge and ability to operate pneumatic tools, wood shop tools, oxyacetylene welding, and arc-cutting tools.
Southwestern’s large sculpture facility is enviably well-equipped for wood, metal, welding, mold making, and 3D printing, with an adjacent covered outdoor facility and a 400-square-foot faculty office / studio.
Classes taught include : Abstract Sculpture, Figurative Sculpture, Intermedia Seminar Sculpture, Intermedia Capstone Sculpture, and Drawing I.
The candidate will also have the opportunity to develop a course based on their own interest within the design, digital media, printmaking, or photography areas of study.
The position’s responsibilities include teaching a 3 / 3 load, contributing to the new foundation’s program, and participating in departmental events and initiatives such as meetings, B.
F.A reviews and capstone presentations, as well as other related departmental and university events (faculty conferences, etc.
The position is supported by the University’s mentorship and teaching development program and is eligible for internal faculty development grants for creative works.
