BAMPFA’s Individual Giving Officer plays an essential role in strengthening and expanding the community of generous annual donors who support the mission of the UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive.

Reporting to the Director of Development (DOD), the Individual Giving Officer is primarily responsible for meeting annual engagement, solicitation, and income targets through frontline work with individual donors and close collaborations with BAMPFA’s curatorial and program staff.

The fundraiser in this position will manage a portfolio of approximately 150 200 current and potential supporters who have the capacity to make annual gifts of $5,000 to $25,000, and with a mature portfolio, will be expected to raise approximately $1 million annually.

This position will play a key role in designing, building, and managing BAMPFA’s new upper-level affiliate groups, including dedicated councils supporting art and film.

The Individual Giving Officer works closely with BAMPFA’s Director, curators, and other members of the development team as well as colleagues in University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) to ensure that BAMPFA’s community of donors is thoughtfully engaged and stewarded throughout the year.

In partnership with the DOD and the Senior Grants Officer, this position will also have the opportunity to solicit restricted gifts for BAMPFA’s exhibitions, collections, programs, and special initiatives.

The professional in this role will be a highly visible representative among the museum’s member, donor, and collector community.

Responsibilities :

Frontline fundraising (50%) : Follows best practices in donor development and moves-management. Devotes majority of time to direct frontline activities to engage, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of 150 200 donors and prospects;

this includes conducting background research, visit requests, in-person or virtual meetings, donor correspondence, contact reports, and stewardship activities.

Makes 90-120 visits per year, with a goal of securing leadership annual gifts from 75% of the portfolio. This activity directly supports the position’s financial goal of raising $750,000-$1 million annually.

Affiliate group management (30%) : Works with senior program staff and volunteer leaders to design and implement BAMPFA’s program of high-level donor affiliate groups, including newly formed councils devoted to art and film.

Plans a comprehensive annual schedule of meetings, events, travel, and other engagement opportunities for each group, as well as an annual calendar of communications, including solicitations, acknowledgments, invitations, and other touchpoints.

Aligns these activities with BAMPFA’s overall fundraising plan to create effective platforms for membership upgrades, major gift cultivation, and board recruitment.

  • Department initiatives (15%) : As part of BAMPFA’s integrated fundraising operation, participates regularly in strategic and operational business of the development department, including annual planning and goal-setting, training and professional development, DEAI initiatives, staffing of donor and member events, and fundraising for the annual gala.
  • Financial planning and reporting (5%) : Works with DOD and Business Services Director on regular revenue projections from the individual giving pipeline, including annual, mid-year, and quarterly projections.

Ensures that all solicitation activity is accurately tracked in CADS to facilitate timely reports and financial forecasts.

Required Qualifications :

  • Thorough understanding of fundraising and donor engagement concepts, principles, techniques, procedures, and practices.
  • Proven history of personally soliciting and securing gifts of four and five figures from individuals, preferably within an art museum or university setting.
  • Thorough ability to plan, articulate, and execute an annual program of donor stewardship and engagement including communications, entertainment, and special events.
  • Demonstrated success in working with board members and volunteers. Preferred : Thorough working knowledge of BAMPFA and / or an institution of a comparable profile including its vision, mission, goals, and objectives.
  • Outstanding written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, including personal warmth and political acumen, to build and maintain effective working relationships internally and externally.
  • Thorough analytical and critical thinking skills, including skill in creative and effective decision-making, problem solving, and conflict resolution.
  • Skills to meet or exceed fundraising goals and objectives, both individually and as part of a team.
  • Highly developed attention to detail, project management, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, discretion, and excellent judgement in handling sensitive information.
  • Strong ability to use and adapt to a variety of software and productivity tools, including Google Suite, Microsoft Office, and various CRM systems (including Tessitura, Salesforce, or similar tools).
  • Ability to multi-task various projects and to maintain a broad range of personal fundraising and stewardship relationships simultaneously.

Education :

Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Salary and Benefits :

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. The annual salary range of the position is $77,500.00 $90,000.00 commensurate with experience.
