This position is in the General Government (GGU) bargaining unit at a range 16.

What You Will Be Doing :

The Alaska Military Youth Academy (AMYA) is Alaska's Premier Leadership Academy. Working at AMYA provides the opportunity to assist Alaska's youth in becoming their best selves.

Multiple coping strategies is a vital skill in this position as you will be modeling and teaching cadets many different coping strategies as they work to deal with their emotions.

The AMYA Counselor is responsible to assess emotional, social, psychological and environmental problems to assist cadets / students with developing appropriate courses of action.

The Working Environment You Can Expect :

The AMYA Counselor position is located on Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson (JBER) at Camp Carroll. It provides ample parking, beautiful mountain views, trails for breaktime walking or jogging, and access to a no-cost fitness center.

The daily work environment is generally indoors, in an office setting, but also involves walking around outside to various buildings on campus and working with the cadets where they are located.

You will be working a non-traditional 37.5 hour work-week Tuesday through Saturday 2 : 00pm to 10 : 00pm.

  • NOTE* The successful applicants must pass a federal background check in order to qualify for military base access, which is required with this position's work location on base.

The background check will include fingerprinting. All job offers are conditional pending successful completion of the federal background check and issuance of a Defense Biometrics Identification System (DBIDS) card allowing base access.

Also, you must be able to maintain the clearance throughout your employment. If using a private vehicle this will require a valid Alaska Driver License, proof of vehicle insurance, and a valid State of Alaska vehicle registration.

State employees are guests on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson; clearance and access is not within the State's control.

Special Note : In addition, in some cases employees must be able to obtain and maintain a Common Access Card (CAC). As part of the examination process, a background check investigation, including a criminal records check, will be conducted.

Conviction of a crime will not automatically preclude appointment. The circumstances involved in the conviction will be considered.

A bachelor's degree or the equivalent from an accredited college;

Possession of a valid Alaska driver's license.

Substitution :

Experience in counseling, interviewing, case management, or work specifically in the behavioral or social services fields may substitute for the required education (3 semester or 4 quarter hours equal one month of experience).

This experience includes work such as AMYA Team Leader, Senior Team Leader, or Youth Counselor with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

  • Last three (3) performance evaluations or three (3) professional letters of recommendation, if evaluations are not available.
  • Three (3) professional references we may contact by phone (must include position titles, and one former supervisor).

  • A complete list of all periods of paid or volunteer work experience relating to working with youth. Must include employer name and dates of employment, supervisor name and contact number, job title, and reason for leaving.
  • Valid Alaska Driver’s License.

If post-secondary education is required to meet the minimum qualifications, you must fill in the Education section of the application.
