Position Summary

The Study Abroad Advisor collaborates with the International Business Director on all aspects of study abroad and foreign partner outreach.

Additionally, the role provides ongoing support for other SSPs, ensuring compliance with University policies in all student experiences abroad.

This position involves some travel during the academic year and / or summer. The Advisor works with the Global Education Office team to assist IB majors with planning and logistics for their study abroad requirements.

Responsibilities also include maintaining clear communication with IB Exchange partners and external program partners on enrollment, program updates, risk management, promotion opportunities, and scholarships.

Furthermore, the Advisor supports program review, risk management, and incident response as needed.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent / probationary position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Standard SDSU work hours are Monday Friday, 8 : 00 . to 4 : 30 ., but may vary based on operational needs.

The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Department Summary

The International Business Program is an interdisciplinary program combining business, foreign languages and cultural knowledge.

Housed in the College of Arts and Letters, International Business is one of the college’s largest majors and one of the largest majors at SDSU.

It currently has about 500 students and is the only nationally ranked undergraduate program in the CSU; the program currently ranks 17th in the nation.

The staff consists of a Program Director, an Internship and Career Advisor (SSP III), an Academic Advisor (SSP III), an Administrative Support Coordinator I, and this position, Study Abroad Advisor (SSP III).

Education and Experience

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field; including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related.

Possession of the required knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience.

One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required.

A Master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience.

A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

Key Qualifications

  • Experience advising on highly complex and sensitive student matters.
  • Experience evaluating international transcripts or working with different international education systems.
  • Ability to travel during a given academic year and / or summer with advanced notice required.
  • Study abroad advising experience or similar relevant international work experience preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $5,276 per month.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range : $5,276 - $7,517 per month.
