The Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana (RHI), named Best Rehabilitation Hospital in Indiana in 2022 and 2023, provides quality rehabilitation services to those facing life-changing injuries or illness.

We specialize in the areas of brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury and complex medical conditions. RHI is the only Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Model System in the state of Indiana and one of only 16 in the U.

S. Our campus on the west side of Indianapolis specializes in inpatient and outpatient evidence-based, patient-centered therapy for ages 15 and older.

SUMMARY / PURPOSE OF JOB

The Director of Nursing (DON ) is responsible for implementation, ongoing management and strategic growth of the nursing department.

The DON oversees day-to-day nursing operations and is responsible for : employee and patient satisfaction, budgeting, quality management, nursing professional development, performance improvement, and human resource management.

The DON is responsible for maintaining collaborative and consultative relationships, integrating nursing within the hospital organization and creating effective working relationships within the organization.

The DON is accountable for achieving Nursing Metrics. As an RN, the DON provides oversight of clinical staff to serve the patient population from fifteen years of age and older based on age-specific need.

Understands and exhibits the principals of service excellence, leads by example, and mentors' others in the performance of their assigned duties.

Additionally, understands that every employee is responsible for exhibiting exceptional customer service by answering call lights on the nursing unit and if not able to assist personally, will inform the appropriate employee regarding the patient's need.

Understands the role of employee's individual position regarding HIPAA requirements and level of access to Protected Health Information as defined in HIPAA hospital-wide policies.

Understands that it is the responsibility of every RHI staff member to provide patient safety as a priority response according to RHI evidence-based practices.

Encourages patients to be actively involved in their own care as a patient safety strategy.

JOB DUTIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Plans, directs, and coordinates clinical activities of the patient care team, including evaluation, treatment and education for the population served.

  • Recruiting, interviewing, hiring and managing personnel in conjunction with the hospitals Human Resources Department.
  • Establishing performance expectations, providing regular feedback and consistently managing these expectations. Completing performance appraisals promoting staff development activities, utilizing performance improvement procedures as necessary, and adhering to the hospitals policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for development of an effective team, motivating and influencing staff members to excel.
  • Collaborates with the quality department to implement and manage continuous Performance Improvement within their assigned program.
  • Monitoring patient, physician and employee satisfaction.
  • Integration of nursing goals and objectives in support of the hospital's strategic goals and objectives.
  • Builds and develops effective working relationships with physicians, clinical and support staff.
  • Encourages all nursing staff to interact positively and in a spirit of teamwork with members of other departments.

Provides effective leadership to personnel to ensure quality patient care.

  • Responsible for investigating and solving problems that arise within assigned area, interfaces with physicians, ancillary personnel, patients and families in regard to problematic issues.
  • Maintains appropriate records, assures that all reports, records, and forms are produced / processed in a timely and accurate manner.

Provides data and statistical analysis as required.

Responsible for fiscal matters related to personnel, supplies, and equipment. Monitors, recommends and facilitates changes in operations / systems to meet designated budget.

  • Develops annual business plans and operating budgets and monitors financial statements for areas of responsibility. Explains variances, recommends plan of action to the CNO and implements plan of correction.
  • Facilitates and participates in program development related to discipline and programmatic needs.

Participates in continuous performance improvement / program evaluation activities. - -Ensures regulatory compliance with JCAHO, CARF and other applicable accrediting and regulatory bodies.

Accountable for integrating hospital safety programs into individual area of responsibility; proactively seeks information and resources, including the Environment of Care Manual, to support the responsibility of safety in the individual areas of responsibility for patients, staff and visitors.

Employee is focused on providing customer satisfaction (including, but not limited to, patients, co-workers, visitors, vendors and physicians) as a primary goal / outcome of all interactions;

places customer first in the performance of job duties and responds to needs in a timely manner as evidenced by the absence of legitimate customer complaints.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

Must display abilities in decision-making, excellent written and verbal skills. Must demonstrate good organizational skills, ability to work in team environment.

Teaching skills, planning, organization, leadership, and interpersonal relationship skills are essential. Must display evidence of initiative, creativity, confidentiality, integrity, objectivity, and flexibility.

EXPERIENCE

Requires a minimum of four years clinical experience (preferred in rehabilitation). Two years in a supervisory role is required.

SPECIAL TRAINING, LICENSURE, CREDENTIALING

  • Current State of Indiana RN licensure is required.
  • Must receive CPR training in accordance with American Heart Association Standards resulting in receipt of course completion card within 8 weeks of hire and maintain current thereafter.

EDUCATION

Requires a bachelor's degree in nursing. Master's degree or written commitment to enter master's program within 1 yr. of acceptance, to be completed within 5 years.

Masters' preparation in Nursing or a related field, including health care administration or business administration is preferred

EQUIPMENT USED

Computer and general office. Must complete orientation to department specific equipment as identified by discipline.
