SALARY NOTE : The salary range is a 7-Step-Plan ($73,549 - $93,063) for a Severance Patrol Officer.

Annual Pay- ENTRY : ($73,549) STEP1 : ($76,491) STEP2 : ($79,550)

STEP 3 : ($82,732) STEP4 : ($86,042) STEP5 : ($89,483) STEP 6 ($93,063)

Lateral candidates may be hired up to Step 6 depending on qualifications and experience.

The Town of Severance pays 100% of the employees’ health, dental, and vision insurance. We cover 50% of Family insurance benefits.

Employee assistance programs, E.A.P. and short-term and long-term disability are 100% paid for by the employer. Severance Police Department participates in FPPA for retirement contributions with employer contributions.

A take-home car is provided if the employee lives within the allowed 30-mile radius of the Town limits.

Severance is a thriving much sought-after town in the heart of northern Colorado with an estimated population of almost 11,000 residents.

A safe and peaceful, yet growing small-town community located just east of I-25 along the Harmony Road corridor. Over nine square miles of coverage as it rests at an elevation of 4,888 feet within Weld County.

Severance Police Department is building a new free-standing police depart with completion scheduled end of 2024.

The incumbent will perform a wide variety of police and law enforcement duties, including the protection of property, crime detection, community policing, and public safety.

The Officer will report directly to the Sergeant and Police Chief.

Candidates who are deemed qualified and eligible will be required to participate in and pass the following steps :

  • Written Exam
  • Oral Board Interview
  • Personal History Statement (PHS) and Release of Information Agreement
  • Background Investigation
  • Interview with the Chief of Police / Town Management
  • Physical and financial, Psychological Exam, Polygraph

Summary of Duties

The below list is intended to be illustrative of the responsibilities of the position and not all-encompassing. The Town may change these duties at any time.

  • Responds to priority calls regarding public disturbances, and criminal, civil, or emergency situations. May provide emergency medical assistance, controls traffic, and otherwise ensures attention is given to public safety.
  • Detects and prevents criminal activities by surveillance of assigned business and residential areas. Notes possible criminal occurrences and takes steps to prevent criminal actions.

Promotes crime prevention by initiating contact with businesses and residents including explaining applicable laws, soliciting cooperation in crime reporting, and otherwise creating a good rapport with citizens.

  • Conducts a variety of community-oriented policing activities including participating in, business and community participation, working with community groups, conducting welfare checks, etc.
  • Investigates crime scenes or accidents and assists other officers. Protects evidence, takes testimony from witnesses, and assists detectives in specialized investigations.
  • Enforces traffic laws, and vehicle codes and promotes traffic safety. Notes illegal or unsafe driving practices and advises or makes arrests as appropriate.

Directs traffic, reports unsafe road conditions, and otherwise promotes vehicular and pedestrian safety.

  • Prepares a variety of daily reports and logs.
  • Prepares and provides testimony in court and works with prosecution attorneys.
  • Provides a variety of related police services including transport of prisoners, assistance to motorists, and mediates family disturbances.
  • Provides code enforcement and animal control activities as needed. Issue appropriate citations and take immediate action to mitigate problems and disputes.
  • May conduct or assist with in-depth investigations involving felonies or other serious offenses and work closely with District Attorneys regarding cases.
  • Performs related work as required and assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

To qualify for this position an applicant must be Colorado POST certified.

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must be able to attain and maintain a variety of law enforcement certifications.
  • Must be able to pass a comprehensive background check, polygraph, drug screen, and psychological and physical exams.
  • Valid Colorado Driver's License and satisfactory driving record.
  • Must live within a 30 mile radius of town limits
  • State of Colorado Peace Officers Standards Certificate (POST Certification) by date of hire or ability to get within 30 days of hire.

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
