Department : Engineering

Reports to : Head of Engineering

Location : Union City, CA; Port Orchard, WA. Hybrid work schedule available

Experience : Minimum 3 years in engineering lead / manager role

Job Type : Full Time (exempt)

Education : B.S. degree in engineering (mechanical, civil, or similar)

Travel : Up to 10%

About the Role

The Project Engineering Manager works in our Custom Engineered-To-Order business leading a team of Engineers and CAD Specialists.

This is an optional hybrid role with required 2 3 days per week in the office with balance work from home.

In this role you will improve and evolve team workflow tools. Guide and mentor the development of Engineering team members, give annual performance reviews and give feedback and coaching where necessary.

You will also work in partnership with Project Management, Manufacturing Engineers, and Operations management to ensure milestones of custom projects meet customer requirements.

As the Engineering Manager you are responsible for guiding the team members with timely and thoughtful design solutions for unique and sometimes evolving project requirements.

You will review criteria, identify, and analyze opportunities and solutions, apply analysis, and design the most optimal project.

Additionally, you may assist in creating or oversee the creation of shop drawings, production drawings, perform load and stability calculations or Finite Element analysis, along with other design documents necessary.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Creates design solutions of manufacturable products that meet engineering standards, project objectives, and user requirements, ensuring on-time completion to the projects due-dates.
  • Performs design work including data research, feasibility, and costing studies.
  • Consistently, and sometimes quickly, solve complex problems with simple cost-effective solutions
  • Stay organized in a fast-paced, open team environment, while working on multiple projects in varying stages and at various levels of development.
  • To continuously identify, recommend and / or undertake activities and methods to make positive contributions to the company goals and initiatives within the scope of the position.
  • Stay current with Tournesol manufacturing capabilities and to provide support for manufacturing / production implementation.
  • Travel to installation locations and / or other Tournesol locations may be required on occasion.
  • Provide Engineering Design Charges to the Estimating for custom projects.
  • Mentor and guide a team of Engineers and CAD Specialists.
  • Set schedules and provide weekly KPIs to Executive Team dashboard.
  • Buildout and document best practice design standards for the team.
  • Update and improvement efficiency of CAD tools, plan check / model / drawing review processes.
  • Fill in for team members on PTO.

Skills

  • Ability to manage a team of onsite and hybrid employees and to work to due dates.
  • Understanding of engineering principles and processes and how to effectively apply them to the creation of products, including but not limited to : DfX (Design for X : Manufacture / Assembly / Cost / Quality / Sustainability), FEA (finite element analysis), structural calculations, prototyping and assembly, physical testing.
  • 3D parametric modeling, drawing / BOM creation.
  • Experience with outdoor product design is a plus.
  • Excellent 3D CAD skills : SolidWorks preferred, Autodesk Inventor or another platform o.k. as well.
  • Proven skill in performing load and stability calculations and utilizing FEA simulations within CAD platforms on both parts and assemblies
  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes : Sheet metal, tubular steel, welding, machining, and forming, extruding (plastic and metal), fiberglass reinforced plastics, glass reinforced concrete, plastic thermoforming, plastic molding, and woodworking.
  • Strong communication skills. Written and verbal.
  • Experience working in a manufacturing facility is helpful.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use a computer. Work will require individual to enter plant areas where performance factors such as : heat, noise, dust, lifting of materials, and working around equipment will be encountered.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several U.S. geographic markets, and we pay differently based on those defined markets.

The pay range for this position is $130,000.00 - $160,000.00 annually. Pay within this range varies by work location and may also depend on tenure, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
