Job Purpose

The General Counsel and Senior Manager of Compliance, Risk, and Law is responsible for the following :

  • Ensuring Honda Tradings compliance with all import and export regulations when conducting cross-border business. This includes overseeing that each company within the Americas Region maintains effective controls to meet both national regulatory requirements and regional expectations. The role also includes the development and implementation of regional trade policies.
  • Collaborating closely with Regional Senior Management and the senior leadership of each company within the region to align compliance and risk strategies.
  • Holding overall responsibility for matters related to trade compliance, corporate governance, risk management, ethics, and Hondas sustainability initiatives.

Key Accountabilities

  • Develop and implement a regional business plan to ensure compliance with international trade regulations.
  • Deliver robust operational processes and policies that support regulatory adherence across all trade activities.
  • Lead comprehensive and consistent trade program management, including risk assessment, reporting, and execution.
  • Oversee trade operations to ensure accurate and consistent application of company policies and procedures, minimizing supply chain disruptions and compliance risks.
  • Provide strategic guidance to leadership to support effective deployment of controls and programs that enable financial predictability.
  • Maintain direct responsibility for ensuring Honda Trading America (HTA) complies with all U.S. import and export regulations.
  • Ensure internal controls are appropriate, effective, and consistently followed.
  • Prevent supply chain interruptions and regulatory penalties by maintaining full compliance with trade laws.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to lead the adoption of regulatory changes and government system updates.
  • Drive the transition from manual to systematic processes through the identification, assessment, and validation of trade data.
  • Qualifications, Experience, and Skills

    Minimum Educational Qualifications :

  • Bachelors degree in Law, Business, or a related field; or a minimum of 12 years of experience in Customs Entry operations, including at least 5 years in a leadership or management role.
  • Minimum Experience :

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience practicing law, including substantial experience managing litigation mattersideally involving high-profile product liability cases.
  • U.S. Customs Broker License is considered an asset.
  • Strong familiarity with import and export operations from the perspective of an importer / exporter.
  • Working knowledge of import / export regulations in Mexico and Canada.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the relevant areas of law, with the ability to provide sound legal guidance.
  • Prior experience in corporate governance and regulatory compliance.
  • Other Job-Specific Skills :

  • Strong understanding of U.S. import and export regulations.
  • Familiarity with requirements from key regulatory agencies, including FCC, FDA, DOT, EPA, and others.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, with the ability to effectively manage documentation, reporting, and communication.

    Financial Dimensions :

  • Centralized entry operations across five U.S. offices, managing an annual import volume of approximately 1,500 entries valued at $400 million, with associated duties totalling $14 million.
  • Oversaw annual export operations comprising roughly 2,500 shipments, with a total export value of $475 million.
  • Responsible for managing a departmental operating budget of $1.2 million, ensuring efficient allocation of resources to support compliance, trade operations, and strategic initiatives.
  • Decisions Expected

  • Recruit, train, and develop departmental staff, regularly evaluating associate progress toward achieving performance objectives throughout the year.
  • Plan, organize, direct, and oversee enterprise-wide trade compliance initiatives to ensure alignment with regulatory requirements and corporate standards.
  • Assess divisional and program-level compliance, identify gaps, and implement corrective actions to strengthen controls.
  • Serve as a key resource for addressing customs and trade-related inquiries from business units, particularly in support of new business activities.
  • Provide legal interpretation and responses to evolving government rules and regulations, ensuring timely and accurate compliance.
