Job Description

Do you like to design, operate, and implement networks of large scale? Would you like your work to play a key role to support all aspects of connectivity to / from Amazon and the outside world, as well as the connectivity between Amazon’s data centers and services to design and architect innovation so networks are fail-proof, infinitely scale and grow?

The AWS GCNA (Global Connectivity and Network Availability) Organization is looking for a Network Development Engineer to join our Backbone Enterprise, and Regional Engineering (BERE) team.

Network Development Engineers partner with our broader Infrastructure organization on configurations standards and tools, and collaborate with Systems and Software Engineers to ensure fast, smooth roll-out of new designs and products, and also deploy and sustain networking software tools.

AWS GCNA (Global Connectivity and Network Availability) is the backbone that connects the global

AWS network. Focused on controlling the internet traffic that allows users to access their information

and applications regardless of where they are in the world. GCNA is responsible for building and

designing a complex backbone network that allows internet traffic to flow efficiently between data

centers and customers.

Key job responsibilities

Network Development Engineers perform high quality network and / or systems operations, deployments, scaling, technology refresh, sustaining engineering, best practices application, optimization, internal / external customer interactions, and produce appropriate technical documentation.

  • tYour core job responsibility is to design network designs, services and deployment procedures that solve for many requirements.
  • tTogether, you and your leadership team will decide on the projects that best support your team’s mission.
  • tYou and your team will design ahead of customer or technology needs, always predicting and solving for problems that have not yet occurred.

This takes the form of creating and defending High Level Design (HLD) and Low Level Design (LLD) documents, working with internal stakeholders to influence technology roadmaps, constructing and testing your solutions, and providing support to the teams that will deploy and operate these designs.

  • tYou will create and automate deployment processes that increases quality and velocity.
  • tYou will Work closely with our internal customers on designs / solutions; bringing those designs / solutions from concept to production

A day in the life

Engineers in the Backbone Enterprise and Regional Engineering (BERE) organization have a wide range

of responsibilities : we work with internal partners to develop and implement the next gen platforms

along with the tooling ecosystems to support with these platforms driving efficiency and scalability

through the automation of builds, configuration deployment, and the scaling of capacity. As our

network is one of the largest in the world, there is no blue print at our scale allowing our engineers to

develop solutions to the complex challenges that we face daily. We encourage durable solutions that

look around corners while taking into consideration our customer needs from a cost, performance, and

reliability perspective. Our team develops tooling that provides the required visibility and control of

traffic across the network, while prioritizing the automatic mitigation of events to minimize the impact

to our customers during events.

  • tWork in a 24x7 team on call rotation, with ability to drive into workplace for critical events / needs.
  • tManage customers during problem resolution and operating efficiently under pressure.
  • tSit at the computer during scheduled work hours with appropriate breaks while maintaining a high level of alertness and attention to detail.
  • tTravel to data center / network sites and Amazon / customer offices as needed.

About the team

Within AWS Networking, the Backbone Enterprise, and Regional Engineering (BERE) organization is

responsible for the design, implementation, and operations of a wide of networking infrastructure

that provide global connectivity between all AWS Regions and edge locations.

BERE provides the massive scale required to support our AWS customers and internal services, via a

network that grows by 70% annually. In addition, they have teams that are responsible for the design

and operation of our global corporate office and data center network, allowing tens of thousands of

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS- 3+ years of automation scripting using Python, Bash, Shell and / or Perl experience

  • 8+ years of major internet routing protocols experience
  • 5+ years of working in a Linux / Unix environment experience
  • Associate's degree, or CEH (Certified Ethical Hacker) or CFR (CyberSec First Responder) or Cloud+ or GICSP (Global Industrial Cyber Security Professional) or SSCP (Systems Security Certified Practitioner)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS- Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years industry experience in a similar environment e.g ISP, peering and exchange, and large (IP) carrier networks.

  • Background in high availability, global backbone design and architecture is highly preferred.
  • Strong Unix / Linux skills and the ability to script in Python, Perl, shell, C or C++ is desirable, SDN is a reality in AWS Networking.

Daily activities will involve applying networking knowledge to SDN and Network Automation tools.

  • Understanding of Hardware Load Balancers in a large data center environment
  • Expert-level certifications (e.g. CCIE, JNCIE) a huge plus.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $127,300 / year in our lowest geographic market up to $247,600 / year in our highest geographic market.

Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and / or other benefits.
