Purpose :

The APP Psychiatry and Mental Health Fellowship is an immersive 12-month program in mental health focusing on underserved populations in a community-based setting.

It attracts APPs seeking a structured educational program to support and guide their development of proficient clinical decision making and their application of specialized skills in the care of the mentally ill patients through in-person didactics and mentored clinical experiences.

Provides specialty health care services within defined scope of practice in collaboration with a licensed psychiatrist and in accordance with MCW / FMLH policies and procedures.

The Fellowship is an academic clinical partnership between the Medical College of Wisconsin, Froedtert Hospital, Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, and University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, and other affiliates.

It is an immersive, longitudinal transition to practice 12-month residency in mental health focusing on underserved populations in community-based settings.

Trainees will gain interdisciplinary team-based experiences across the life span. It will consist of core clinical rotations in a variety of ambulatory settings and an inpatient setting, elective rotations in specialized ambulatory settings, and didactic experiences

Anticipated Workweek : Position requires flexibility with respect to clinical rotations spanning inpatient and outpatient settings.

Fellowship Expectation and Learning Outcomes :

  • Advanced Assessment : Elicits, selects, and integrates information in the care of patients with acute, critical, and / or complex chronic illnesses using physiologic technologic and pharmacologic inputs.
  • Differential Diagnosis : Makes and prioritizes real and potential conditions based on available data and the complexity and severity of patient condition.
  • Outcomes Identification : Formulates goals and outcomes using scientific evidence that are consistent with the patient's wishes and present and potential capabilities.
  • Plan of Care : Develops, prescribes, and / or modifies an outcomes-focused plan of care with an interprofessional team targeting health care that may be restorative, curative, rehabilitative, maintenance and or end-of-life for patients with complex needs.
  • Implementation of Treatment : Identifies, prescribes, performs, or delegates therapeutic interventions.
  • Evaluation of Care : Demonstrates ongoing evaluation of plan of care, recognizing patient response to therapy and change in condition, making modifications and assimilation of care team recommendations.

CORE ADVANCED PRACTICE RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Performs comprehensive histories and psychiatric assessments, identifies normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive, and psychosocial status.
  • Orders and interprets laboratory and diagnostic tests.
  • Develops pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans.
  • Monitors effectiveness of plan of care.
  • Educates patients on disease and treatment plans.
  • Performs procedures as trained and appropriately credentialed.
  • Documents within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes other necessary documents.
  • Collaborates and / or consults with physicians and other health care providers as appropriate.
  • Educates, counsels, and assists patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activities and preventive behaviors.

Minimum Position Qualifications :

Nurse Practitioners

Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Master's or Doctoral Program

Must possess the National Board Certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner, Geriatric-Adult Nurse Practitioner or Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner at the start of the program.

Possess licensure as a NP in Wisconsin by the start of the program.

Eligible for DEA licensure.

Acceptable criminal background check

Physician Assistants / Associates

Completion of an accredited Physician Associate's master's program

Possess NCCPAs certification by the start of the program.

Possess licensure as a PA in Wisconsin by the start of the program

Eligible for DEA licensure.

Acceptable criminal background check

Candidates will only be considered for acceptance if they are currently attending or have completed an accredited NP / PA program.
