Summary / Objectives

Design and development of new products and improvements to existing products or product lines. Evaluates and ensures design feasibility and design optimization.

Apply knowledge of Engineering principals to design and approve component and assembly designs for products used in the traffic and utility industries.

The Design Engineer will participate in the product design process from the generation of concept design solutions through the product introduction.

Design Engineer II will also be responsible for conducting analysis on new and existing designs in order to ensure the product meets defined performance criteria.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following (other duties may be assigned) :

  • Research and develop designs that provide solutions
  • Create design concepts and layouts utilizing Autodesk Inventor
  • Generate Engineering documentation and calculations on product designs requiring conformance to standards such as but not limited to AASHTO, FHWA and MUTCD.
  • Verify designs through engineering analysis.
  • Suggest and instruct product test team on setup and execution of physical testing for verification and correlation of developed Engineering documentation.
  • Research customer and agency requirements for new product development projects.
  • Develop prototype design recommend validate through laboratory and life testing.
  • Participate in design reviews with other Design Engineers, key marketing employees and manufacturing personnel.
  • Develop preliminary bills of materials for all new products.
  • Ensure new designs meet cost and budget parameters.
  • Insure product compliance to all regulatory and safety agency standards.
  • Provide training and support to team members.

  • Proven Experience working in a design-engineering environment
  • Computer experience (3D Modeling, AutoCAD, Word, Excel, Power Point)
  • Familiar with Design for Manufacturing techniques and FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis)
  • Must have a strong writing, planning, project management and problem solving skills

Education and / or Experience :

List both required and preferred education and / or experience that are job-related and consistent with business necessity.

Include any required certifications, industry-specific experience, equipment experience)

Required :

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or related field of study
  • 3-7 years of hands-on industry experience with product design and engineering analysis.
  • Structural design and analysis experience required

Preferred :

Advanced experience with AutoCAD and Inventor 3D modeling.

Experience with Finite Element Analysis in Inventor

The employee must frequently lift and / or move up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift and / or move heavier items utilizing a team lift.

Required Personal Protective Equipment includes, but is not limited to, safety glasses, hearing protection, steel-toe shoes, respirator mask, and coveralls.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment :

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to airborne contaminants, moving mechanical parts and vibration.

Work environment is not climate-controlled. The noise level may exceed permissible exposure limit and hearing protection may be required.

Position Type / Expected Hours of Work :

Full-Time. Work Schedule : Monday through Friday, 7 : 00AM 5 : 00PM. 9 / 80 schedule with every other Friday off. Hours are subject to change at any time.

Travel :

Minimal travel is expected for this position.
