Classification Description Summary

  • Under general supervision, maintains and repairs a variety of City vehicles and equipment including gasoline and diesel powered, heavy and light construction, and other power driven equipment;
  • inspects, diagnoses, overhauls, repairs, and adjusts engines, transmissions, and related vehicle systems and components;

maintains a variety of records and reports; and performs a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

Essential Functions

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and / or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

Perform skilled mechanic duties involving repairs to gasoline and diesel powered, heavy and light construction, and other power driven equipment.

Inspect, diagnose, and locate mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic difficulties on a variety of City equipment and vehicles including, but not limited to, sewer and storm drain equipment, police vehicles, and parks and golf course maintenance equipment and vehicles.

Diagnose, maintain, and repair electrical system components, ignition systems, computers, alternators, high voltage power generators, starters, and batteries.

Diagnose, maintain, repair, and recondition hydraulic systems, front and rear drive axles, drive train components, belts, gears, and chain drives.

Replace or repair faulty parts including wheel bearings, clutches, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and related parts and equipment.

Tune-up engines by replacing ignition parts and reconditioning and adjusting carburetors, throttle body, port fuel injection systems, and propane fuel systems;

repair and maintain emission control systems.

Repair, adjust, and replace brake systems including wheel cylinders, master cylinders, disc pads, machine drums and rotors, and hydraulic and air brakes.

Sharpen blades and reels on golf course mowing equipment; replace bed knives, bearings, and rollers as necessary; perform emergency repairs on the golf course as needed.

Investigate, measure, and collect data on projects that require specialized tools to complete; fabricate, weld, and assemble parts and equipment for City automotive and heavy equipment;

fabricate and modify tools as needed.

Maintain an accurate inventory of parts for maintenance and emergency repairs; assist in the purchasing of equipment maintenance parts and materials;

contact vendors and suppliers to obtain parts and materials as needed.

Maintain and repair automated fuel system.

Assist in the maintenance and cleanliness of the shop and surrounding work area; dispose of waste, oils and chemicals according to established safety procedures and guidelines.

Maintain and update records of preventive maintenance on assigned vehicles; input information into the computer; prepare statistical maintenance reports as necessary.

Perform related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and / or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.

Knowledge of :

Operations, services and activities of a full service equipment maintenance and repair program.

Operational characteristics of various equipment and tools used in the overhaul, repair, and adjustment of gas and diesel powered equipment.

Procedures of preventive maintenance related to automotive, heavy and light construction equipment.

Methods and techniques of mechanical inspection, maintenance and repair of internal combustion and diesel engines.

Operational characteristics of hydraulic and electrical systems.

Methods and techniques of performing diagnostic troubleshooting services.

Principles and methods of preventive maintenance.

Methods, materials, equipment and tools used in welding and fabrication work.

Occupational hazards and standard safety practices necessary in the area of work assigned.

Principles and procedures of record keeping.

Ability to :

Perform a variety of mechanic work including diagnosing, troubleshooting, fabricating, and repairing vehicles and equipment.

Use modern, sophisticated tools and equipment to diagnose and repair automotive vehicles and equipment.

Diagnose problems and repair automotive, hydraulic and other mechanical equipment.

Perform major and minor tune-ups.

Accurately determine mechanical repair needs and estimate the cost and time of repairs.

Safely and effectively operate a variety of power and hand tools used in heavy and light equipment repair.

Perform a variety of welding work.

Maintain a variety of shop and repair records.

Observe safety principles and work in a safe manner.

Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Work in a team based environment to achieve common goals.

Coordinate multiple projects and complex tasks simultaneously.

Meet the physical requirements to safely and effectively perform the assigned duties.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be :

Education / Training :

High School Diploma or equivalent supplemented by completion of apprenticeship and / or training in automotive maintenance and mechanical repairs.

Experience :

Five years of experience in the maintenance and mechanical repair of a variety of vehicles and equipment including four years as an apprentice and one as a journey level equipment mechanic.

License or Certificate :

Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid commercial driver's license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements within the probationary period (six months).

  • Physical : Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a mechanic shop environment; walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods of time;
  • frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, and twist; push, pull, lift, and / or carry moderate to heavy amounts of weights;

operate assigned equipment and vehicles; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.
