About the Role :

Dr. Squatch is seeking a seasoned and strategic Senior Legal Counsel with a strong intellectual property (IP) background to join our growing legal team.

In this role, you will play a pivotal role in safeguarding our IP, assisting on litigations, assisting with contracts, resolving disputes pre-litigation, ensuring data / privacy compliance, assisting with employment law compliance and issues, managing our advertising review claims process, and serving as the Head of Legal's right hand.

You will be a key partner in mitigating legal risks and supporting the achievement of our company's objectives. Reporting directly to the Head of Legal, this is a high visibility, high impact role, working directly cross-functionally with all of the business teams.

You should enjoy close collaboration with legal and non-legal colleagues and generally, approach legal issues practically and with a problem-solving mindset.

This is a full-time, hybrid role with company benefits based out of Marina del Rey, CA. The current hybrid plan is to be in the office on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

The anticipated base compensation for this role will be $160,000 to $200,000. Compensation will be commensurate with the candidate's experience and local market rates

What You'll Do :

  • Serve as a generalist supporting the Head of Legal across various needs and functions.
  • Manage the company's international IP portfolio, including trademarks, copyrights, and patents, in collaboration with external counsel.
  • Oversee all aspects of international trademark protection, including applications, oppositions, and enforcement actions (including preparing and following up on cease and desists) and, eventually, patent and trade secret protections
  • Manage outside counsel on smaller litigation matters, such as privacy wiretapping, employment disputes, and document subpoena responses.
  • Assist in pre-litigation dispute resolution.
  • Manage and respond to miscellaneous legal requests
  • Implement and maintain a comprehensive data / privacy compliance program, ensuring adherence to all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Partner with Transactional Legal Counsel to provide legal guidance and support on business transactions.
  • Train and mentor Transactional Legal Counsel as needed.
  • Assist in managing advertising claims and liaise with the compliance team once a system is established.
  • Provide insightful and timely legal advice and counsel on a broad range of legal issues as they arise for the company.
  • Help prepare or conduct trainings and presentations to educate across the organization.
  • Conduct thorough legal research and analysis to support informed decision-making.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate complex legal agreements and contracts.
  • Stay up-to-date on legal developments and industry trends relevant to the company's operations.

About You :

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active license with State Bar of California.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience, ideally with both litigation and transactional experience.
  • Proven experience in managing IP portfolios.
  • Previous in-house and law firm experience preferred.
  • Experience working with outside counsel and managing litigation matters.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and legal research databases.
  • Interest in health and wellness, personal care, and / or eCommerce industries.
  • Experience working in the consumer products industry is preferred.
