Assistant Professor of Game Development and Emerging Media, Tenure Track

The Division of Mass Communication seeks a dynamic scholar-practitioner for a full-time, tenure-track appointment (industry professional) as Assistant Professor of Game Development and Emerging Media, commencing September 1, 2024.

The ideal candidate is skilled in transdisciplinary storytelling and can bridge game development techniques and interactive authorship to courses in film and other creative production-oriented disciplines.

Candidates sought are student-centered and produce research and creative achievements that enhance the constellation of programs in our Design Factory framework.

They employ evidence-based practices to meet the interdisciplinary needs of our collaborative candidates will teach intermediate and advanced game development and film production / editing courses, guide students in project management, and facilitate games' successful release and promotion beyond the academic context.

Responsibilities

This is a teaching-focused position (teaching 12 credit hours per semester) with opportunities for course reductions based on creative professional activity or research.

Industry involvement, creative professional activity, and research productivity are important but secondary to a strong commitment to teaching excellence and student engagement.

Division faculty are expected to participate in academic advisement, student mentoring, academic assessment, and other activities as required by the Chair and / or Dean.

Qualifications : Minimum :

Minimum :

  • Terminal degree in game development or related discipline in interactive digital media.
  • Programming proficiency with a AAA-level game development platform
  • Experience in teaching undergraduate classes in (film) editing and production
  • College-level teaching experience (including teaching assistantships) or equivalent professional industry experience

Preferred :

  • Proficiency with Epic Unreal Engine
  • Expertise in virtual production, xR / AR / VR / MR, and other visual storytelling forms
  • Integrative approach to pedagogy (e.g., fusing embodied cognition in UX, design patterns in OOP, etc.)
  • Proficiency with C++, C#
  • Emerging professional research / exhibition record
  • Interest in development of serious games : visualization, simulation, and interventions towards social good
