Position overview

Position title : Chief, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism Salary range : The posted UC Salary scales set the minimum pay at the appointment as determined by appointment type and if applicable, rank and / or step.

The base pay range for this position is $280,000 $320,000. Salary is negotiated annually. Additional compensation may be available if the position includes membership in the Health Sciences Compensation Plan.

Position description

Chief, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism

The Department of Medicine at University of California, San Diego, () is actively recruiting to fill the tenured position of Chief, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism ().

The Department of Medicine and Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism are committed to academic excellence and diversity across the faculty, staff, and student body and is interested in candidates to lead a research program, are committed to teaching and mentoring the next generation of physicians and faculty, and are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusivity in the workplace.

The UCSD Endocrinology and Metabolism division consists of over 30 full-time active faculty, 12 academics, 29 postdoctoral fellows, and 45 staff members.

Clinical care, research, and teaching by faculty members occur at UC San Diego Health and the VA San Diego Medical Center.

Divisional faculty receive over $10 million in grant funding each year, including $6.5 million from the NIH. The Division has innovative basic, translational, and clinical research programs in type 1 and type 2 diabetes, obesity, insulin resistance, metabolic liver disease, dyslipidemia, metabolic bone disease, and other endocrine disturbances.

The Division also has an outstanding Endocrinology Fellowship Program with clinical and research tracks. The research fellowship track is supported, in part, by a NIDDK-funded T32 fellowship program in Experimental Endocrinology and Metabolism that the Division has held for over 40 years.

Graduate student research is supported by a second T32 award in Molecular Endocrinology. The Division is also home to Southern California’s NIDDK-funded Diabetes Research Center that is shared with UCLA.

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing leadership in teaching and research, and / or patient care.

The appointment at the Associate or Full Professor level will be based on the candidate’s background and experience. Series will include 50% Ladder Rank / 50% In-Residence with secured extramural funding or 100% Ladder Rank.

As a member of the Health Sciences Compensation Plan, the appointee should be aware that there are limitations on outside professional activities, and clinical moonlighting is expressly prohibited.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Candidates must have a MD or equivalent, MD / PhD, or PhD with an emphasis relevant to endocrinology and metabolism.

Candidates must have 5+ years of a track record of leading a clinical, translational and / or basic research program. Candidates must also have an independent extramurally-funded research program (NIH R01 or similar) and 5+ years of research in high impact journals with 5+ grants and / or publications in endocrinology / metabolism.

Candidates with a MD or equivalent with clinical duties must be Board certified or Board eligible in Internal Medicine and must also have or be eligible for a California medical license or equivalent certification / permit as determined by the Medical Board of California.

Preferred qualifications

Candidates with national recognition in research are preferred.

Candidates with a vision for how to sustain and grow all facets of the Division’s missions as well as fostering a collaborative and collegial work environment are also preferred.
