Under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, performs hazardous and nonhazardous sterile compounding, nonsterile compounding, delivers medications, and is responsible for refilling and loading of medications into automated dispensing machines (ADMs).
Performs other medication related tasks such as packaging, preparation of oral and IV medications, record keeping, and all aspects of their distribution.
Assists in the transportation and handling of controlled substances and all required documentation as related to their delivery.
Maintains 50 % of time performing sterile compounding activities and / or specialized tasks, including addressing MAR messages, code cart management, controlled substance receiving / reconciliation and medication ordering.
Major Responsibilities :
- Prepares intravenous (IV) drugs using aseptic technique in compounding parenteral nutrition, antibiotics, chemotherapy and other IV drugs.
- Maintains required documentation in accordance with regulatory and hospital requirements and maintains respect for patient confidentiality.
Generates necessary pharmacy reports.
- Performs all major responsibilities of an Inpatient Pharmacy Technician I.
- Complies with all state and federal standards for compounding medications.
- Prepare sterile parenteral products from a patient order including additive, volume and concentration. Prepares adult, pediatric, neonatal parenteral nutrition.
- Prepare batch preparations of sterile compounded products for high use items.
Position Qualifications :
License / Certification / Education :
Required :
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Current license with the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy.
- Certified by one of the national governing bodies such as Pharmacy Technician Certification Board PTCB, or the National Healthcareer Association ExCPT
- Maintains advanced pharmacy technician certification for IV compounding.
Experience / Skills :
Required :
- 3 years of previous experience.
- Position requires proficiency in math and, knowledge and ability to use a computer.
- Must be able to follow oral and written instructions with accuracy, efficiency, and dependability.
- Positive work ethic, motivated and professional demeanor to promote teamwork in the department.
Preferred :
- Hospital pharmacy experience preferred.
- Sterile compounding experience preferred.
