We are seeking an Associate Director, Basic Science Departments & Centers FP&A who will direct the financial planning and analysis for basic science departments and centers / institutes at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Responsibilities include assigning portfolios to analysts, facilitating communication between departments, consolidating financial data, creating budgets and forecasts, analyzing trends, approving budgets, and managing a team of Sr.

Financial Analysts. Collaboration with stakeholders and ensuring proficiency in relevant tools are also key aspects of the role.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Assignment & Coordination

  • Assign a portfolio of departments to each analyst to cultivate relationships between FP&A and departments.
  • Allocate functional responsibilities to analysts as needed to produce required school analyses, long-range plans, and hypothetical scenarios.
  • Facilitate regular meetings between analysts and basic science departments and institutes (16) to foster two-way communication, promote advocacy for departments within JHM and JHU, facilitate knowledge transfer, and foster a shared understanding of financial activities.
  • Consolidate financial information from various verticals within SOM Central Finance (e.g., faculty practice, financial operations, research finance, and analytics) to provide a comprehensive view of basic science departmental and institute activity across all funds.

Creation / Preparation / Development

  • Prepare consolidated budgets for basic science departments and centers.
  • Develop relevant forecasts and financial projections.
  • Oversee the preparation of financial plans, budgets, and forecasts.
  • Design and implement financial models and reports.
  • Develop and execute corrective action plans for budget variances.
  • Enhance financial monitoring methods.

Analysis / Interpretation

  • Offer financial consultation and guidance for significant, critical, complex projects, business operations, and initiatives.
  • Analyze financial trends in basic science departments and centers
  • Conduct variance analysis.
  • Evaluate accruals and projections for accuracy.

Approval / Verification

  • Approve budgets for basic science departments and centers
  • Provide monthly variance reporting, including a consolidated view of performance.
  • Participate in decision-making teams and committees for approval of research and teaching program expansions or consolidations.

Supervision & Training

  • Directly manage a team of three Sr. Financial Analysts.
  • Act as a liaison between Directors of Finance or finance managers for basic science departments and institutes and provide guidance and feedback about job performance.
  • Oversee personnel management activities, including recruitment, hiring, performance evaluations, and terminations.
  • Establish and evaluate responsibilities as outlined in employee job descriptions.
  • Ensure proficiency among team members in relevant tools for job execution, such as Excel, Business Objects, EPSi, and Tableau.
  • Serve as a role model and mentor, guiding employees on expected levels of performance and behaviors associated with stakeholder customer service.

Collaboration

Engage with various stakeholders including Department Directors, Administrators, Budget teams, Financial Operations colleagues, training associates, Financial Analytics colleagues, JHU Internal Audit and others.

Physical Requirements

  • Sitting. Extended periods of sitting are common while working at a desk or workstation. Employees should be able to sit for prolonged periods with proper posture to maintain comfort and prevent fatigue.
  • Typing and Using Computer Devices. Proficiency in typing and utilizing computer devices such as keyboards, mice, and touchscreens is essential.

This requires manual dexterity and the ability to operate office equipment effectively.

Occasional Movement. While office work primarily involves sedentary tasks, occasional movement within the office space may be necessary.

This could include walking to different areas of the office, attending meetings, or retrieving documents from filing cabinets or printers.

  • Occasional Lifting and Carrying. There may be occasions when lifting or carrying lightweight objects weighing 10lbs. or less is necessary, such as moving office supplies or equipment.
  • Occasional Pushing and Pulling. Some tasks may require pushing or pulling objects, such as rolling chairs or moving lightweight furniture or equipment weighing 30lbs. or less.
  • Ergonomic Awareness. Awareness of ergonomic principles and practices is important to minimize the risk of musculoskeletal discomfort or injury.

This includes adjusting workstation setups, using ergonomic furniture, and practicing proper lifting techniques when necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or a related field plus 8+ years of progressively responsible financial and business operations experience, preferably in a large and complex organization.
  • Proven communication, organizational, and analytic skills in a complex organization.
  • Demonstrated strategic leadership, planning, change management and process improvement skills.
  • Strong supervisory abilities and proven experience in managing and developing high performance teams within a highly change oriented culture.
  • Ability to analyze data for budgeting, operations, auditing, accounts receivable, and reserve analysis.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in research financial management and academic business operations.
