Position description

The Department of Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor with concentration in structural design and building technology beginning Fall 2024.

Creating safe, resilient, sustainable, and structurally innovative buildings is an essential part of architectural education and practice.

Incorporating these principles into the design and engineering of structures and / or facades will play an even more important role in the future as our built environment is increasingly transformed by social, economic, and environmental impacts.

To continue our long tradition of excellence in the area of Building Science, Technology, and Sustainability (BSTS), the Department of Architecture seeks exceptional candidates whose creative work, professional experience, research, and teaching focus on structural design and innovation, with an aim towards addressing important environmental and social issues of concern such as minimizing waste and embodied or operational carbon emissions, optimizing material use, enhancing durability and adaptability, exploring new construction typologies, improving life cycle performance, and enriching the environmental quality and experience for inhabitants.

Research may focus on any phase of the building life cycle, from overall building design, structural concept, material selection, construction processes, occupancy and performance monitoring, maintenance and reuse, to deconstruction and recycling.

The Department is seeking applicants with experience in or strong potential for developing funded research collaborations.

The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate outstanding scholarship, teaching, and communication skills, and have an ability to integrate technical knowledge into architectural design.

Responsibilities of the position include teaching an introductory lecture course on structural design at the undergraduate level, and advanced graduate-level seminars related to the applicant's specific area of expertise.

The ability and desire to consult on structural and other technical aspects as part of the integrated design studio is also highly desirable.

Additional responsibilities may include advising undergraduate, M.Arch, M.S., and Ph.D. students as well as providing services to the department, college, and university.

The Department of Architecture at UC Berkeley is housed within the College of Environmental Design (CED), along with the departments of Landscape Architecture & Environmental Planning and City & Regional Planning.

Founded in 1959, the CED has long been at the forefront of environmental design education. As the first institution to combine architecture, planning, and landscape architecture into a single college, we offer a vigorous cross-disciplinary environment where collaboration and experimentation flourishes.

Within this context, the Department of Architecture's evolution has been nourished by social, cultural, technological, and environmental values, and our geographical setting.

Situated on the Pacific Rim at the border with Latin America and facing Asia, California is an urban laboratory that has long been recognized as an area for design research and experimentation.

These values are reflected in our innovative teaching, scholarly research, critical design inquiry, and discursive practices.

Our award-winning faculty bring both broad and deep intellectual diversity to our educational community.
