We instruct students in a range of scientific disciplines related to health and disease control in animals. In addition to teaching foundational classes in medical topics, students are trained in clinical skills needed to diagnose and treat illness in animals.

The clinical program at NC State Veterinary Medicine provides a heavy emphasis for actual hands-on clinical practice and is demanding both physically and mentally.

Students select focus areas to increase their depth of training in their intended area of post-graduate activity, while still retaining a broad based veterinary education.

Faculty also encourage and challenge students to develop the personal and professional knowledge and skills needed to serve a global community.

Essential Job Duties :

The Associate Dean and Director of Professional Education and Admissions ( ADDPEA ) is a key leadership position at the college of veterinary medicine.

The ADDPEA serves as a member of the Dean’s leadership team and is a member of the college’s Full Cabinet.

Associate Dean and Director of Professional Education and Admissions oversees the DVM Curriculum, the Teaching Animal Unit, support and advising of faculty teaching practices, and the DVM admissions team.

Associate Dean and Director of Professional Education and Admissions plays a critical role in the success of a major goal of the NCSU-CVM Strategic Plan which is to provide Trainee-Centered Learning and to lead in preparing adaptable, career-ready professionals.

Associate Dean and Director of Professional Education and Admissions advances veterinary medical education through the following :

  • Monitoring of the DVM program to ensure the establishment and maintenance of accreditation standards required by the AVMA / AAVMC Council on Education.
  • Overseeing delivery of the curriculum to ensure that adequate elective, selective and facilitated courses are offered to meet student needs.
  • Evaluation of the curriculum and its ongoing revision, including horizontal and vertical integration of course content, and use of modern teaching methods based on adult learning theory.
  • Creating and continually updating a system where learning outcomes are assessed and recorded.
  • Supporting faculty needs for improvement in teaching skills and practice.
  • Advancing educational practice through discovery and practice and providing leadership in this area.
  • Overseeing the DVM admissions process including development of programs and off-campus recruitment to create a robust and diverse applicant pool.
  • Ensuring compliance with University regulations and college policy related to instructional delivery and evaluation.
  • Administering the educational budgets.
  • Overseeing the Teaching Animal Unit, a teaching lab designed for veterinary students to learn husbandry, production management, and routine procedures used in livestock production.

The ADDPEA is an innovative and strategic thinker who can build consensus amongst all faculty. The position supports faculty initiatives in curricular development and pedagogy and creates a cohesive and collaborative culture for the evaluation and ongoing revision of the DVM program.

Important to these requirements are excellent communication skills and the recognition that the profession needs to incorporate changes in modern pedagogy, technology, patient demographics and workforce structure.

The ADDPEA specifically oversees the Office of Academic Affairs, including all of the units and individuals who report through it, including :

Minimum Education and Experience :

  • Requires a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) / Veterinary Medicine Doctor (VMD), or equivalent.
  • Current Rank of Tenured Full Professor or currently eligible or anticipated evaluation for such within the next 12 months.
  • Has demonstrated academic leadership experience.
  • A record of active participation in professional / scientific affairs and of teaching and scholarly experience.

Other Required Qualifications :

  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and function independently with limited supervision and guidance.
  • Ability to work with faculty and staff from multiple disciplines and functions across the college.
  • Ability to make decisions and lead a complex team

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Advanced training in pedagogy (degree or certificate programs highly encouraged).
  • Experience in veterinary education at the institutional level, preferably working in the development, implementation, evaluation and monitoring of an education program leading to the DVM degree.
  • Experience developing, sustaining and enhancing programs that keep pace with changes in veterinary education.
