Job Summary

Under the direction of the Director of Special Education, screen, evaluate and provide therapy, speech correction and special training to students with a variety of communication disabilities;

monitor, assess and adjust therapy in response to student issues, needs and progress; meet, consult and confer with parents, staff, faculty, administrators and others concerning the speech and other communication needs and issues of students.

Additional 2% stipend for holding Certificate of Clinical Competence

Additional $2000 / year Special Education Service Provider stipend

CLASS TITLE : SPEECH THERAPIST

BASIC FUNCTION :

Under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent-Educational Services, screen, evaluate and provide therapy, speech correction and special training to students with a variety of communication disabilities;

monitor, assess and adjust therapy in response to student issues, needs and progress; meet, consult and confer with parents, staff, faculty, administrators and others concerning the speech and other communication needs and issues of students.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES :

ESSENTIAL DUTIES :

Screen, evaluate and provide therapy, speech correction and special training to students with a variety of communication disabilities;

provide individual and group treatment and instruction to students with various speech disabilities; establish and maintain treatment and therapeutic goals and objectives to improve student communication skills and enhance learning.

Monitor, assess and adjust therapy in response to student issues, needs and progress; administer, score and interpret diagnostic tests to identify language, speech, hearing and other communication needs of students;

place students in appropriate treatment and therapeutic programs; develop and implement remedial strategies, goals, objectives, schedules and techniques.

Meet and confer with parents, staff, faculty, administrators and others concerning speech and other communication needs and issues of students;

respond to parent requests; update parents concerning student progress; resolve therapeutic issues and conflicts in a proper and timely manner.

Assist teachers in screening referrals for speech therapy; observe and assess student conditions, diagnose speech problems and recommend student placement in appropriate school, special education and other programs;

determine eligibility for services and therapy; follow up to assure students receive appropriate services.

Provide consultation and technical assistance to students, parents, staff, administrators and outside agencies concerning speech and other communication disabilities, therapy, instruction and related activities;

respond to inquiries and provide information concerning related plans, issues, problems, strategies, goals, objectives, principles, practices, techniques and procedures.

Review and analyze student assessments and records; identify, diagnose and formulate educational, treatment and development plans and strategies for various communication disabilities and other student issues;

coordinate and oversee therapeutic student drills, exercises, practices and assignments; work with individual students to correct or minimize speech disabilities.

Provide recommendations to parents concerning methods for enhancing the communication and educational progress of students;

refer parents to community resources, health agencies and outside therapy services as appropriate.

Coordinate the speech therapy program with other school programs and services; report educational and therapeutic progress of students to school personnel.

Prepare and maintain a variety of records, reports and files elated to students, disabilities, assessments, therapy, progress and assigned activities.

  • Communicate with parents, staff, administrators, faculty and various outside agencies to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns;
  • Operate a variety of office and instructional equipment including a computer and assigned software; utilize assistive technology devices;

drive a vehicle to conduct work.

Attend and participate in various meetings as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES :

KNOWLEDGE OF :

Instructional and therapeutic terminology, theories, concepts, materials, equipment, methods, practices and procedures related to speech and other communication disabilities.

Proper administration, evaluation and interpretation of diagnostic test and measurements.

Techniques and methods of speech assessment, diagnosis and planning.

Strategies and techniques used in the remedial instruction of students with speech and other communication disabilities.

Principals and practices of child development.

Community agencies and referral sources.

Applicable laws, codes, rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

Record keeping and report writing techniques.

Operation of standard office and classroom equipment including a computer and assigned software.

Oral and written communication skills.

Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.

Policies and objectives of assigned program and activities.

Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

ABILITY TO :

Screen, evaluate and provide therapy, speech correction and special training to students with a variety of communication disabilities.

Diagnose speech problems and recommend student placement in appropriate school, special education and other programs.

Provide consultation and technical assistance concerning speech and other communication disabilities, therapy, instruction and related activities.

Develop and implement remedial strategies, goals, objectives and techniques for individual students. Administer, score and interpret diagnostic tests to identify speech needs, issues and disabilities.

Coordinate and oversee therapeutic student drills, exercises, practices and assignments.

Interpret, apply and explain laws, codes, rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

Plan and organize work.

Meet schedules and time lines.

Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.

Operate standard office and classroom equipment including a computer and assigned software.

Maintain records and prepare reports.

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :

Any combination equivalent to : bachelor's degree supplemented by graduate courses needed to meet credential requirements and one year experience working with therapeutic evaluation, scheduling and organization.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS :

Valid and appropriate California Teaching Credential required for speech therapy services.

Valid California driver's license.

Requirements / Qualifications

This assignment is for the 2024 - 2025 school year.
