Minimum Qualifications

Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education / experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. In a biological science or related field
  • Research experience involving cryoTEM
  • Hands-on experience with cryoTEM sample preparation
  • Hands-on experience with cryoTEM data collection and data processing
  • Hands-on experience with operating cryoTEM and conventional (RT) TEM
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member to accomplish goals
  • Experience handling chemical and biologically hazardous materials
  • Basic knowledge of standard ultramicrotomy
  • Good organizational skills

Position Summary

The successful candidate in this position will work independently, as well as with students, staff, and faculty of UGA , to advance the cryogenic electron microscopy of biological samples, as well as assist with conventional imaging.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and / or Competencies

  • Hands-on experience with biological sample preparation for both cryoTEM and conventional TEM
  • Detail oriented and able to maintain accurate lab records and handle data efficiently
  • Experience with training or assisting others
  • Well organized and dependable
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member
  • Ability to learn new laboratory procedures rapidly
  • Willing to maintain annual training of compliance laboratory policies and procedures
  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate projects
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with colleagues and clients
  • Desire to learn advanced techniques and new methodologies
  • Self-motivated, positive individual

Duties / Responsibilities

Operations and maintenance of two cryo-transmission electron microscopes ( TFS Tundra and JEOL 2100) and data collection with these microscopes, including cryo-sample preparation.

Percentage of time

Duties / Responsibilities

Preparing biological samples for conventional transmission and scanning electron microscopy (e.g. fixation, dehydration, embedding in resin, critical point drying, sputter coating, histochemical labeling of proteins, ultramicrotomy, negative staining etc.)

Assisting with data collection and sample preparation using cryo-scanning electron microscopy and conventional transmission electron microscopy.
