Job Title : Senior School Nurse / Director of RNs

Reports to : Associate Head of School

Position Overview

The ideal candidate will be able to supervise and guide age-appropriate health care to students with learning disabilities from kindergarten through 12th grade.

The Senior School Nurse / Director of RNs will report to the Associate Head of School and supervise the health staff while working closely with the division heads, members of administrative staff, and the faculty / staff.

The Senior School RN / Director of RNs will oversee the collection and review of student health information including documentation of the annual physical exam (from the primary care provider) and annual health updates completed by families.

The Senior School Nurse / Director of RNs works in conjunction with the HR department with the onboarding of new faculty and staff as related to required health documentation.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

Successful candidates must possess the ability to guide families with wisdom, warmth, and intelligence, and the ability to work cooperatively with faculty, staff, parents, and students and will hold high professional standards.

The nurse will understand that the role involves providing both comfort and medical intervention for students and employees.

  • Overseeing the health program provided in three buildings;
  • Maintaining necessary records for the Department of Health, monitor the immunization status of students ensuring that we are meeting all the requirements of the NYC DOH;
  • Hires supervises, and evaluates all health employees and creates daily and weekly schedules;
  • Assigns RNs for day, overnight, and international trips;
  • Support RNs and when necessary, perform nursing assessment and intervention for illnesses and injuries during the school day and ensure all visit documentation is complete and accurate;
  • Fosters the professional growth of nursing staff through participation in school-wide professional development and RN-specific continuing education programs;
  • Ensure daily medication administration, including controlled substance counts is documented and followed;
  • Maintain health records (yearly physicals and immunization records) as well as forms relating to travel / trips, emergency care, and medication using the Magnus system;
  • Work with nurses to ensure compliance with school policy and NYC / State requirements;
  • Communicate pertinent medical and health information with employees and families as necessary;
  • Oversee the ordering for the nurse's office, including inventory and supply ordering;
  • Prepare documentation and supplies to accompany overnight and international trips;
  • Schedule annual influenza vaccines for staff and faculty;
  • Refer families for appropriate follow-up medical care, contact families to follow up on absences and medical conditions;
  • Proactively provide the administration with updates regarding pressing health issues;
  • Attend senior administration meetings and provide education on health issues as needed;
  • In the case of a public health emergency, may be required to administer diagnostic testing or other interventions as permitted by licensing and the NYC DOH, NYS DOH, or CDC;
  • Participate in the school’s emergency response planning;
  • And other responsibilities as assigned by the Associate Head;

Supervisory Responsibility

This position supervises the registered nurses (RNs).

Position Type / Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time exempt, ten-month position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 7 : 30 a.m. to 3 : 30 p.

m. with a half-hour paid lunch. Evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand and will be scheduled in advance.

Attendance is required on professional development and parent-teacher conference days.

Travel

Travel between campuses is necessary on occasion for meetings, that are scheduled with advanced notice and are within walking distance from each other.

As a part of your job requirement, all nursing staff must go on at least one overnight trip every school year.

Requirements

Required Education & Experience

  • Registered Professional Nurse with current NYS License
  • Current BLS Certification
  • Graduate Degree in Nursing or Nursing Administration
  • Experience as a nurse working with children and adolescents- special education experience a plus
  • Experience working in a school setting preferred
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • A high degree of attention to detail, organization, and flexibility
  • Proficiency in database management for health records and basic computer operation including Excel and G-Suite

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, this position's annual base salary range is $110,000 - $120,000.
