JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

The Accounting Manager is a part of the Finance Department within the Operations Zone. Primary responsibilities include preparing monthly financial statements in accordance with GAAP for nonprofit organizations, managing the daily accounting functions of the church and supervising the Accounting Assistant.

Additionally, the Accounting Manager will work closely with the Director of Operations in processing payroll and sharing human resources (HR) tasks.

This position will also help improve and implement systems, policies and procedures related to accounting, payroll and HR.

This position reports to the Director of Operations and is a full-time, salaried (exempt), support-level position with benefits.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • General Ledger
  • Monthly financial statement preparation for review by Dir. of Operations and distribution to department leaders, Mission Leadership and the Board of Directors.
  • Monitor compliance of internal control procedures to ensure safeguarding of staff and assets as well as enable proper recording of financial activity.
  • Post month end journal entries and other transactions as needed.
  • Serve as the initial point of contact for staff with questions on department budgets, financial statements and other accounting issues.
  • Contributions and Other Receipts
  • Supervise weekly counting, recording and deposit of weekly contributions and posting to general ledger by the Accounting Assistant.
  • Maintain fund designations in the church database system to facilitate online giving and proper recording of designated contributions.
  • Oversee proper processing within IRS guidelines of non-cash contributions.
  • Serve as the primary contact to answer questions from church attendees about their contributions.
  • Be the church database financials module expert and go to person for staff.
  • Accounts Payables
  • Supervise the Accounting Assistant and work together to ensure proper procedures are followed and authorizations obtained prior to disbursement of funds, including church corporate credit card activity.
  • Prepare annual 1099 filings with the IRS, including review of year-to-date vendor payments.
  • Payroll and Human Resources
  • In coordination with the Dir. of Operations, process bi-weekly payroll and post to the general ledger.
  • Schedule and reconcile all payroll deductions (insurance plans, HSA, 403b contributions)
  • Work with the Dir. of Operations and CCC’s insurance broker for open enrollment and changes then updating in CCC’s HRIS system.
  • Assist the Dir. of Operations with Human Resources projects and tasks as assigned.
  • Cash Management
  • In coordination with the Dir. of Operations, manage cash balances to ensure funds are available when needed.
  • Prepare wire transfers and ACH transactions for review by the Dir. of Operations.
  • Prepare monthly bank reconciliations.
  • Annual Audit and Other Fiscal Year-end Responsibilities
  • Coordinate the annual review of the church by an outside auditing firm.
  • Assist with preparation of financial information for Annual Report presented to congregation.
  • Make appropriate changes to the chart of accounts, check requests, and credit card report forms to reflect changes to budget every fiscal year.
  • Work Schedule & Meetings
  • Work Schedule : 8 : 00am-4 : 30pm M-F, but flexibility needed at times.
  • Meetings : Attend all required staff meetings / retreats (Weekly Devos & Prayer, Monthly Staff Luncheons, Annual Retreat)

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Character :
  • A Christ-honoring life marked by personal holiness, prayer, bible study, spiritual and emotional maturity and increasing dependence on the Holy Spirit (Titus 1 : 6-9, 1 Timothy 3 : 1-7).
  • Unquestionable integrity, specifically in handling finances, relationships, and time management.
  • A person who understands and models the Christian principle of servant-leadership.
  • Someone who is eager, flexible and has a teachable spirit.
  • Competency :
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting and a minimum of 2 years of accounting experience required. Nonprofit accounting experience preferred.
  • Familiar with fund accounting, GL account schedule prep, bank reconciliation and budgeting.
  • Takes personal initiative in learning and possesses solid computer skills.
  • Advanced-level experience and proven competency with Excel and accounting software
  • Proven ability to work independently, problem solve and see the big picture .
  • Experience with church management systems a plus
  • A team player; able to effectively multitask projects.
  • Exemplifies sound discretion and confidentiality in decision making and interpersonal interactions.
  • Effectively communicates with and relates to people of all ages and is comfortable in interdenominational settings.
