About the Institute for Matter and Systems

The Institute for Matter and Systems (IMS), an Interdisciplinary Research Institute at Georgia Tech, solves societal, technological, and scientific challenges by integrating knowledge, methods, and expertise across disciplines :

  • Fundamental science to comprehend and control matter from the nanoscale to the mesoscale.
  • The synthesis, processing, and characterization of materials to achieve desired properties.
  • The design and fabrication of novel devices and components with enhanced capabilities.

The Materials Characterization Facility (MCF) is a shared-user facility in the Institute for Matter and Systems (IMS), the interdisciplinary research institute at the Georgia Institute of Technology dedicated to novel materials and devices and their incorporation into systems.

The MCF makes available a wide variety of microscopy, microanalysis, and characterization tools as well as skilled research staff to support the needs of academic, industry, and government users.

Job Summary

The MCF is seeking an experienced researcher to support existing and planned instrumentation & personnel in its near-surface phenomena core.

The position will interact with students, faculty, staff, vendors, and contractors. This position will have one or more direct reports.

Responsibilities

The researcher in this position will :

  • Manage activities (training, usage, maintenance, etc.) for multiple MCF instruments including, but not limited to, Near-Ambient-Pressure and UHV XPS systems.
  • Interact with various Principal Investigators - both internal (GT) and external academic and industrial - to learn / explain how their research would best benefit from MCF analysis.
  • Perform and / or direct advanced imaging / analytical measurements.
  • Lead and coordinate efforts to run training workshops on the principles of sample preparation, instrument operation and data processing for near-surface techniques.
  • Develop standard operating procedures and best practices reference guides (ex. Written quick start guides, YouTube channel reference videos) for the near-surface techniques in conjunction with workshop development.
  • Advise on & participate in proposals for new equipment and investigations.

Required Qualifications

Research Scientist II

  • A master's degree in science, engineering or related area, and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree, or
  • A master's degree in science, engineering or related area, and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a bachelor's degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree

Senior Research Scientist

  • A master's degree and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree, or
  • A masters degree and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a bachelor's degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a bachelor's degree

Preferred Qualifications

  • A master's degree in a relevant field (e.g., Materials Science & Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, etc.) and five (5) years of experience working with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) systems after completion of a bachelor's degree, or a Ph.D. in a relevant field.
  • Extensive experience working with UHV systems including but not limited to surface analysis instruments.
  • A sound understanding of radiation-matter interactions.
  • A publication history demonstrating expertise in applying materials characterization and surface science techniques to research questions.
  • Broad experience with materials characterization techniques in addition to surface science instruments (Scanning Probe Microscopy, optical techniques, etc.)
  • Experience as part of a team in a multi-user environment or serving a large community of users.
  • Experience in operation and maintenance of differentially pumped systems.
  • Equipment troubleshooting, maintenance, and / or repair experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in producing text / media materials in support of educational activities related to near-surface phenomena.
