Primary Health Care (PHC) was founded in 1981 by Dr. Bery Engebretsen in Des Moines, IA. Our mission has remained unchanged since that time, to provide healthcare and supportive services to all, regardless of insurance, immigration status, or ability to pay.

Based on the needs of the communities we serve, PHC offers a spectrum of medical and dental services including family practice, behavioral health, HIV care and services, and pharmacy.

PHC’s Homeless Support Services is the entry point for serving people experiencing homelessness in Polk County. Enabling services are available to help patients with benefits enrollment, case management, transportation, translation, and patient education.

We currently have locations in Ames, Des Moines, & Marshalltown.

As a Medical Assistant, you will support the delivery of healthcare by providing clinical care and administrative support as delegated by licensed clinical staff.

You will work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to welcome patients to a safe and inclusive environment and to engage patients in holistic care.

Enjoy work-life balance with one weekday off each week. This position works approximately 40 hours per week, including two 12-hour shifts and two 8-hour shifts Monday - Friday.

This position also participates in the Saturday rotation, working 9 AM - 1 PM, approximately once every other month.

Earn a $5.00 per hour shift differential when working at least 3 hours either on a Saturday or after 5 PM on weekdays.

What You Will Do

  • Documents patient care accurately and timely in the electronic health record. (Clinical documentation)
  • Facilitates the patient rooming and intake process and obtains accurate patient vital signs per established workflow. (Patient rooming, intake, and vital signs)
  • Performs point-of-care testing per CLIA guidelines and other established workflows. Ensures service orders are completed timely.

  • Administers medications, immunizations, and treatments per written or standing orders. (Medication administration)
  • Performs lab and diagnostic testing per written orders, explains testing procedure and preparation, and reports test results per procedure.

  • Completes timely prior authorizations and referrals per established guidelines. (Prior authorizations and referral management)
  • Answers and returns phone calls timely.
  • Prepares for exam / procedure and assists provider as requested.
  • Provides patient education appropriate to the patient’s age and identified learning needs.
  • Collaborates with assigned Care Team by participating in team huddles and pre-visit planning for scheduled patients.
  • Completes and accurately documents quality controls per established process.
  • Performs pre-cleaning and transport of contaminated instruments per infection control policies and procedures.
  • Routinely evaluates supply levels in exam rooms, removing expired supplies and restocking as appropriate.

Qualifications You Need to Bring

  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program
  • Current Medical Assistant Certification or Registration issued by AAMA, AMT, NCCT, or NHA
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers Certification*
  • Mandatory Reporter Certification*
  • Must be obtained within Introductory Period if not current

Your experience and skills determine your base pay. The hiring range for this position is typically $19.00 - $21.25, though highly experienced candidates may earn up to $25.
