About the Program and Position :

Our Transitional Foster Care Program for Unaccompanied Children (UC) overseen by the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), ensures the well-being and safety of unaccompanied children (ages 0-17) who cross the US Southern border without an adult.

Unlike traditional congregate care settings, our approach involves placing unaccompanied children in foster homes while diligently searching for and assessing potential sponsors identified in the US.

During their stay with us, we provide medical care, case management, engaging life skills classes, and essential mental health services.

Our Nurse Practitioners play a crucial role in assessing and ensuring the health & well-being of our unaccompanied children who are trying to establish a new home in the United States.

Our Nurse Practitioners support and initially treat any medical needs required by the children in our program. They must work collaboratively with other team members involved in the child's care to provide appropriate services.

How you get to use your skills

  • Conduct initial medical assessments for each youth who are arriving from the border or being transferred from another program
  • Diagnose and treat basic medical conditions identified at time of initial assessment or during a sick-call
  • Direct care responsibilities include but are not limited to : administering immunizations, managing wounds and infections, writing prescriptions, interpreting ECGs, drawing blood, etc.
  • Be able to place and interpret PPD skin tests for youth and for staff
  • Conduct follow-up services and refer youth to appropriate medical specialties when necessary
  • Create and electronically submit Treatment Authorization Requests and other required medical paperwork
  • Create and update information in electronic medical record systems (Unaccompanied Children Portal and MEDENT)
  • Discuss medical conditions with the Office of Refugee Resettlement and the Federal Field Specialists; ensure all regulations are met
  • Work collaboratively with the all members of the medical team, the Case Manager, Clinician, and Skills Trainer to provide appropriate services to all youth in our programs

Regular hours entail Saturday and Sunday 9am-7pm

  • Must be flexible to meet program needs
  • Holidays may be required

Appropriate NYS certifications and licensure - required

  • Experience working with at-risk youth - strongly preferred
  • Strong communication and organizational skills - required
  • Bi-lingual preferred - English-Spanish.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.) and electronic medical record systems (MEDENT)
  • Experience with G-Suite is a plus
  • Ability to handle confidential material in a responsible manner
  • Ability to work effectively in a team context
  • Demonstrated ability to perform duties with minimal supervision and to exercise appropriate judgment
  • Ability to travel to other agency locations

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :

Word processing : Including responding to emails, composing letters, completing computerized documentation,

  • This involves sitting at a computer for several hours
  • Completing paperwork -Such as copying, scanning and faxing documents
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
